    Flight Sim World Announced

What We Know And Announcement Trailer Breakdown

    By Michael Hayward

    Flight Sim World

Dovetail Games released on Wednesday a teaser to their latest flight simulator on show, Flight Sim World. As someone who kept a close eye at what became of the Microsoft Flight Simulator series, in this article I will go through the new announcement trailer and talk about what we see and what we can expect upon early access and release.

During the 10 year anniversary of FSX, I did talk about the downfall of ACES Team and how Dovetail took over the flight simulator franchise. Feel to read it here.

    Dovetail Games

First of all, Dovetail Games and the name of the game itself. Dovetail Games are a company based in Chatham, England. They are known for their Train Simulator franchise Railworks, later Train Simulator 20XX, and now known as Train Sim World. Train Sim World is a train simulator where the user can conduct different locomotives across a wide range of pre-made and user-made routes with the use of Steam Workshop Integration. [Editor's note: TSW ships with only one route; others will be available as add-ons.] Their Train Simulator line is fairly infamous within the community for their heavy use of DLC but is praised for the good graphics and the overall interface and use of the simulator. There are also holes in some areas such as the overall physics and performance of the game, but it generally gets favorable reviews from its users.

Flight Sim World - The World Awaits

Another game they have developed was Euro Fishing. In this one, the aim is to catch fish using different techniques whilst competing with your friends in mini competitions.

Fascinating! We are in the process of going from rags to riches in this hobby. If this all pans out we will have a choice of three very realistic flight simulators with which to drain our bank accounts! Still much cheaper than the real thing, though!

My only concern going forward might be too much fragmentation of a market that is not really all that big, compared to something like the first person shooter games that we see. A similar thing has happened in the real airline industry now that any airline can fly anywhere - the markets have become so fragmented that we see mostly RJ's now at anything less than a hub airport. In the flight sim hobby, we may find the overall financial pie sliced at least three ways, and unless a lot of us buy all three (certainly a possibility - I know I will!) then the divided pot may be less lucrative than the developers expected.

But lets enjoy it as it happens!

Michael, Great breakdown, and you have made it a lot more enticing for me! One correction if I may. You said, "We already see ORBX provide scenery and Accu-Feel on aircraft, so who knows what else they have in store for us!"
ORBX provides wonderful scenery, but it is the team at A2A Simulations that provide us with Accu-Feel.

Having been disappointed by Flight and then Flight School, I hope DTG will understand the skepticism felt by many of us.

There was meant to be a comma in there, but it was after uploading I noticed the gap being too short therefore sounding like ORBX providing Accu-Feel.

Otherwise, glad you enjoyed the breakdown!

I'm sitting back with my popcorn on this. So, they are releasing an early access program... Read BETA in that! They want the buying community to troubleshoot their unfinished game.
What about the freeware developers, the backbone of our hobby (Milton et al!) Will they be marginalized?

Are we going to be tied up to only getting add-ons via Steam for this A2A/Orbx sim?
Mmmm, maybe the planes in the early access release will be the same as they gave us in their Flight School?

Far too little info & hype at this stage to get very excited. The main info released is A2A, Orbx, 64bit, & DX11, & eye candy. We all remember the video clips advertising FSX at the time, & how reality did not match facts.
      DTG, show/tell us more!!

It is not unusual to prerelease games on Steam, but other than that I agree with zswobbie.

We hardly know anything at all about the new DTG sim, and the proof of the pudding will be in the eating.

Give the DTG EULA a read, it's comedy gold for developers! You are allowed to make addons and modifications to their games, but the moment you release it, they get full rights to it no matter what.

whilst i herald any potential new simulation on the scene my alarm bells start to ring loudly when DTG persistently use the word "game" not simulation, so whilst I look forward to the arrival of this product , going on their past products and their descriptions i am not expecting anything great this time around and am focussed on getting X plane

If you want to feel the air under your plane - there is only one sim: Xplane !
once you get used to the aerodynamics of xplane you do not want to go back to fly on rails.

Have you tried FSX/P3D with Active Sky Next? A proper weather engine goes a long way with adding a realistic feel to the imperfect fsx/p3d flight models.

Anyhow, X-Plane's flight model isn't perfect either. I have followed X-Plane 11's beta run and in about half the beta updates there were major changes to the flight model. And I'm pretty sure there are more to come... so it's not like X-Plane has a perfect flight model either.

Thanks, Michael for the breakdown. Personally, I have serious skepticism concerning Dovetail myself: Flight (incomplete-gone), Flight School (incomplete-gone), now this next one (does anyone else see a pattern?). So far, they haven't fully produced or stuck with a flight sim past an early stage. I'm going to see how long this new sim floats before I even consider a possibility of a purchase. Best of luck to those of you who will pay for an early beta. I hope it works out. :-) Three sims would be a great thing for the community.

Flight was developed and released by Microsoft, Dovetail had no stakes in this. Likewise, I believe that this is the first time Dovetail have done the early access method of releasing a game. Before this, they just release it and hope for the best. By having early access and learning from Flight School, it should hopefully mean Dovetail have a little more to work with, as long as people give it a chance and we'll, play around with it and report bugs rather than call it rubbish and quit.

If this can be properly developed, then it's good that newcomers will have a greater choice of sims.

But I understand that existing scenery etc won't be compatible.

As an existing simmer, with well over £1,000 of add-on's invested in FSX, it'll have to be really exceptional to make me ditch my current set up.

As a long-term user of DTG's Rail Sim, I would adopt a degree of scepticism about any claims DTG make. Their recently released Train Sim World (TSW) attempted to update a very old and creaking graphics engine with Unreal. It has been very disappointing to the vast majority of Railsim afficianados given its very poor fps and few have decided to 'upgrade', given the fact that the amount of 3rd party developer items and freeware for the older sim is vast.

DTG are a company that has to make money but they are pretty ruthless - beware!

And that's why it will need to be more attractive to new simmers than existing simmers.

Scepticism ? Of course, about what kind hardware(CPU&GDU) it will REALLY need
to make it work just fairly.
About how much douzain of hours of tweaks & tuning it will need to make it work...

It would have to be something spectacular to get me to purchase it. Too much money in FSX at this point to start over.

Just the thought of using it through Steam makes it more of a game than a Sim. Anyway will see what happens? these people have gone through many failures so far....
