Freeware Focus - Tenkuu Developers Studio

    By Michael Hayward

For many people, splashing out on high end products such as the PMDG Boeing 737 NGX and the QualityWings Ultimate 787 Collection is simply not an option. Tenkuu Developers Studio is known for their freeware, high-quality models of the Boeing 737, 787 and 727 aircraft, with models that cover everything from different engine types to winglet and light configurations. The flight dynamics of each aircraft have also been worked on so as to match their real-life counterparts, and in some cases can be more realistic than payware alternatives.

Formed as a merger of SkySpirit and Project Open Sky (when they closed down), TDS have striven to provide highly realistic models for both FSX and FS2004 without simmers having to spend a single penny. This has led to small but growing communities, including here at FlightSim.Com. These hubs include forums, plus three different Facebook groups. This is where members can share repaints, etc.

Seen by many as their flagship model, the TDS Boeing 787 features realistic modelling and flight dynamics, which are based on the real aircraft. Released in 2013, it was the first aircraft the newly created team had produced, and as such, there was plenty of hype surrounding it when it came out.

    Aircraft Modelling

The slick shape of the Boeing 787's body has been recreated in incredible detail, with every minor detail and panel gap visible, through the use of bump maps. All of the flight surfaces are animated as are other important animations, such as landing gear.

Finer details include indents for the different lights, plus the grooves on the back of the engine covers. The 787 is the oldest model in the TDS fleet, and when compared to the team's newer offerings, it is of slightly lower quality. However, this never becomes a concern or detracts from your enjoyment, as the depth of modelling is, even now, of a high quality!

When FSX was released, new features such as wing flex were added, which made the aircraft appear more life-like, and with the TDS 787, this is exactly what you get. This one additional feature really characterised the aircraft for me, and brought the entire aircraft to life.

    Flight Dynamics

The TDS Boeing 787 flies well, and thanks to its long swooping wings, it definitely likes to be in the air; perhaps on occasion...a bit too much. I've noticed at times that when climbing with enough speed, you can pitch the nose down only for the aircraft to continue to climb! It also feels a little sluggish, but for a freeware model, you can't really expect anything too groundbreaking. Even with this questionable characteristic, the aircraft is still highly enjoyable and definitely worth adding to your fleet!

    Opinion on the Aircraft

Overall, I really enjoy flying the TDS Boeing 787. The model looks good and the minor details such as the wing flex really help bring the aircraft to life. Like all TDS models, the 787 does not include a virtual cockpit (one can be added though). It also relies on the default 737 sounds, but these can be easily modified with numerous freeware/payware sound extensions.

It's great to see TDS going back and renovating these older sim designs...the updates are readily evident, and their attention to detail makes them the best in the freeware lot....really excited with the upcoming 757...thanks for your efforts. It's readily apparent that you enjoy your work!

I wonder if they will fix the speed issues with the 787? So it won't pitch down and climb!

I actually haven't heard that they are doing a 757! Unless you've made that as an assumption from the first paragraph...

Wasn't following them on the general discussions page, just the specific aircraft ones. Looks really good that! I'll definitely make an addition to this article once the new 757 releases.

I grabbed one of these some time back.
The exterior and features were great....but.

No VC. Unless I am missing something. Unless there is a VC or a way of putting one into these planes they are not something I can use.

But good work anyway and some folks really like a 2D cockpit.

There is a way to do a VC cockpit merge, basically take the virtual cockpit from another aircraft and put it in this one. Definitely worth a shot, especially with the TDS models!
