    Bob Chicilo Developer Interview

    Conducted by FlightSim.Com Staff

Bob, when did you start doing flight dynamics for flight simulators?

I started modifying aircraft flight dynamics around ten years ago. This was with FS2002. The reason I got started with it was because I wasn't satisfied with the way some aircraft flew. In my mind, there is always room for improvement.

Bob Chicilo     Bob Chicilo     Bob Chicilo

Has the way in which MSFS aircraft behave changed since FS2002 and if so, how?

The aircraft in FSX don't behave the same as in FS2002 or FS2004. The biggest thing I noticed is that all the default aircraft that can go above 30,000 feet cannot be flown at 8x and 16x time compression at cruise altitude and cruise speed without the nose bobbing up and down. They all seem to be OK at 4x time compression or less.

I still don't know all the reasons for this happening, but reducing the pitch MOI value helps at least reduce the pitching motion, when over 4x time compression.

Bob, what do you consider your best or most popular work to date?

I think one of the best aircraft I have ever done is the SU-35. The reason being, I think I got her characteristics pretty close to the real aircraft. The most satisfying was probably the Airbus M400. I had to change record 1545 in the air file to have it fly OK. I have never tried to estimate how many changes in the air or aircraft.cfg file are made for the average update as there are too many to think about.

    Bob Chicilo     Bob Chicilo

What do you find the most challenging aspect of modifying air files?

It really depends on the aircraft, but usually, the most difficult thing to get right is the cruise attitude when using 8x and 16x time compression. Preventing the aircraft from bobbing up and down at this speed is a real pain to get right. This is mainly in FSX as it's not much of a problem in FS2004.

I know you've talked about your best and most popular work, but could you tell us which projects have been your favorite?

My favorites are the ones which I feel accurately (within MSFS limitations) emulate the flight characteristics of the real aircraft. In this case I would have to mention the SU-27, F-4 Phantom 2, Vigilante and the T-33.

When modifying the aircraft, what software packages do you use?

I use Notepad for the aircraft.cfg file and I use AirEd and Aircraft Airfile Manager for the air files. For any panel and paint work, I use Corel Photo-paint and DXTBmp. I use Notepad for any reworking of effects.

    Bob Chicilo     Bob Chicilo

Bob, do you develop payware/freeware or both and why?

Everything I have done for MSFS has been freeware. The reason being, the aircraft I work with have all been uploaded via generous individuals wishing to share their work with the community. Because of this, how could I even think to charge for what I do? It would be just plain wrong.

I agreed a lot with Bob, many Flightsim aircraft have excellent physical design, moving parts and texture by are lacking in the aerodynamics in the CFG file. Like Bob I have a testing sequence for the aerodynamics. It can take time but always worth the effort.

Bob - keep at it and you are a star doing it all for us simmers😇

      Mr. Chicilo,
Would you be interested in doing an update of the XB-35 available here for downloading. This model has turboprop engines instead of the piston engines as built. I know a turboprop version was proposed but never actually built. I took at stab at, but it's beyond my abilities I managed to get the engines changed but the throttles wouldn't advance). The file is https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/fslib...ght&fid=181315.
Appreciate everything you've done for the sim community.

If I am right, the model maker was Kazunori Ito. I promised him years ago that I would not update any more of his models. But reserved the right to update anything I had already updated.

It is good to hear that someone still uses some of my earliest work. I liked how the Avenger turned out best of all of the conversions I did for FS9.

Absolutely, love flying it! I also enjoy flying a lot of Mike Stone and J.R. Lucariny's models because of your updates. Big Fan and thanks again for your hard work..
