Caernarfon Airport is located in the heart of Snowdonia, an area of outstanding natural beauty and the first national park of Wales. Snowdon, the highest mountain in England and Wales, rises to just over 3,600 feet and is only a few minutes away by air.

RAF Llandwrog, as it was previously known when established in 1941, was the largest airfield in Wales during the Second World War. Its primary function at the time was in the training of bomber crews (gunners, radio operators and navigators).

Later on it became home to the RAF Mountain Rescue but in 1953 they stopped using it as a military airfield and thus it came to be known as Caernarfon Airport.

Caernarfon Airport (home to the Wales Air Ambulance service) has an on-site aviation museum which is a popular attraction for the many visitors Snowdonia enjoys each year. The airport is also very popular with pilots and is ideally positioned for flights across the UK and Ireland, though runway 02/20 is now permanently unlicensed due to the installation of two 152' amsl wind turbines situated approximately halfway down the runway and 30 meters from the runway edge. However, it can still be used if permission is granted from the airport manager.

Once purchased, SIM720's EGCK Caernarfon Airport is downloaded in zip form and weighs in at just over 560 MB. The initial setup enables you to choose from a multitude of simulators in which to install the scenery into. These are: FSX, P3Dv1, P3Dv2, P3Dv3 and FSX:SE. Once your desired simulator is chosen you are then asked to enter your own unique serial key. This initiates the online activation process and the installation then takes a further couple of minutes to complete.

Once the installation procedure has been completed, you'll find added to your desktop, a Sim720 control panel. This allows you to enable/disable certain aspects of the scenery, including static objects and airport clutter which, although pleasing to the eye, could effect performance on some lower end systems.

Another feature of the Sim720 control panel is the ability to choose the color of the main (photoreal) ground polygon. Here you can choose from default FSX, Orbx FTX Wales or Horizon VFR. For those using a newer version of P3D and Steve's DX10 Scenery Fixer, you'll be glad to know that Caernarfon Airport is DX10 compatible.

Documentation comes in the form of an 18 page PDF manual which is both clear and informative. It includes a brief history of Caernarfon Airport, the installation procedure, charts, scenery coverage and performance tips. All in all it is an extremely helpful document which (if read) will ensure you get the most out of your newly purchased scenery.

As is common with sceneries from Sim720, the detail is not strictly limited to the boundary of Caernarfon Airport. The total area covered comes to just over 12 square kilometres, with a 25cm resolution within the airport boundary and 60cm for the remainder.

With the scenery set up to work with Horizon's VFR scenery of Wales, plus Earth Simulations Treescapes, the resulting graphics were incredibly realistic.
