Enabling VC Views For Aircraft Without Virtual Cockpits Part 1

    By Erwin Welker

    Purpose

CFS2, FS2002 and FS2004 whilst old, offer a wealth of amazing aircraft to the flight simulator enthusiast. Unfortunately many of these aircraft do not have virtual cockpits (VC) and the different bitmaps which supply the views in the panel folder do not work when ported directly into FSX.

Looking in any other direction than forward (main panel view) will cause you to see just scenery. This is often a big disappointment, especially when the rest of the aircraft is so complete. Is there a way to fix this shortcoming? Yes there is and hopefully this tutorial will explain how to enable, at the very least, the pilot's view (complete with simple canopy) plus a static instrument panel.

    Objective

To change a single hex symbol of the .MDL (3D model) using a hex editor and then correct the eyepoint in the aircraft.cfg.

    Requirements

You will need a hex editor with the option to edit the hex values directly (not just the text but also the translated words). For this tutorial I will be using the editor "Hex-Editor MX".

You can download the English version of Hex-Editor MX 6.0 here:

    http://www.updatestar.com/topic/hex%20editor%20mx%20english%20version

If you can find only find the German version, don't worry as it won't really be an issue.

For the purpose of this tutorial I will use Kazunori Ito's wonderful Yak-38 VTOL fighter. Zip file name: yak38_42.zip.

    Knowledge

Knowledge of hex numbers or how they work with a hex editor is not necessary. The only step you will need to do is: Find a certain number and then replace it with another number. You should also be familiar with opening the aircraft.cfg with a text editor or WordPad.

The required time for replacing the hex number (with practice following the same routine) is usually around 30 seconds. The required time for correcting the eyepoint will cost you up to 15 minutes.

    Let's Start

First download and install a hex editor.

Then, for the purpose of this tutorial, download and install Kazunori Ito's yak38_42.zip.

I recommend installing the editor to a location where it is easily accessible. I also suggest copying and pasting your MDL folder (this is the model folder of your aircraft) directly into the same folder as the hex editor (or even to the desktop). This makes it very easy for you to find and open the MDL with the hex editor.

    Step 1

Execute the preinstalled hex editor and open the MDL (Yak-38.mdl).

Depending on the hex editor you are using, look at the menu bar for an option similar to:

      Thanks Erwin.
Just applied this to my VC-less F28, and works fine after tweaking the eyepoint.
      Can't wait to see part-2

      Great tutorial!
Does that means, that ALL aircraft can have the VC by following your changes?

Not all, but most of all the stuff without VC from FS2004 and older, I believe 95 %.

Does this process also work for adding a VC into FS2004 aircraft?

Which means that I can create a personal VC for the Digital Aviation Fokker 70/100 right?

Yes, there is no difference between FSX and FS2004

It works for almost all aircraft which does NOT have a VC. Usable for FS2002, CFS2, FS2004 and FSX-compatible aircrafts.
Will not work for REAL FSX-aircrafts made by FSX-SDK. But those models generally have VCs.
