    FSX Steam Edition

Take to the skies in the world's favorite flight simulator!

The multi award winning Microsoft Flight Simulator X lands on Steam for the first time. Take off from anywhere in the world, flying some of the world's most iconic aircraft to any one of 24,000 destinations. Microsoft Flight Simulator X Steam Edition has updated multiplayer and Windows 8.1 support.

Take the controls of aircraft such as the 747 jumbo jet, F/A-18 Hornet, P-51D Mustang, EH-101 helicopter and others - an aircraft for every kind of flying and adventure. Select your starting location, set the time, the season, and the weather. Take off from one of more than 24,000 airports and explore a world of aviation beauty that has entranced millions of plane fans from across the globe.

FSX Steam Edition offers players a connected world where they can choose who they want to be, from air-traffic controller to pilot or co-pilot. Racing mode allows you to compete against friends with four types of racing, including Red Bull Air Race courses, the unlimited Reno National Championship course, as well as cross country, competition sailplane courses and fictional courses like the Hoop and Jet Canyon. Test your skills with three different levels of difficulty, from simple pylon racing to racing highly challenging courses in a variety of weather conditions.

With over 80 missions, test your prowess to earn rewards. Try your hand at Search and Rescue, Test Pilot, Carrier Operations, and more. Keep track of how you have done on each mission and improve your skill levels until you're ready for the next challenge.

FSX Steam Edition enables pilots to fly the aircraft of their dreams, from the De Havilland DHC-2 Beaver floatplane and Grumman G-21A Goose to the AirCreation 582SL Ultralight and Maule M7 Orion with wheels and skis. Add to your collection of aircraft and improve the fidelity of your world with FSX add-ons.

The inclusion of AI-controlled jetways, fuel trucks and moving baggage carts, adds extra realism to the experience of flying at busy airports.

Whether you want to challenge your friends to a heart-pounding race or just take in the scenery, FSX Steam Edition will immerse you in a dynamic, living world that brings a realistic flying experience into your home.

    Please Note

Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition (FSX: Steam Edition) is functionally similar to the boxed version of Microsoft Flight Simulator X (MSFSX). We have worked extensively with third party developers to make sure the two products can work alongside each other, however due to the wide range of add-on products available for MSFSX, we cannot guarantee that your existing content will work with Microsoft Flight Simulator X Steam Edition.

If you already have MSFSX installed on your PC and are concerned about running the two games alongside each other, you may wish to consider installing FSX: Steam Edition on a separate PC.

If you already have MSFSX and add-ons installed they will only be accessible through your existing installation. They will not be duplicated across the original edition and Steam Edition of the simulator.

Microsoft Flight Simulator X: Steam Edition Change Log

The below change log represents the key changes made to FSX: Gold Edition to create FSX: Steam Edition.

    General

    • FSX: Steam Edition is now built using the VS2013 compiler for better optimisation and performance. (Still makes use of VS2005 libraries for backwards compatibility.)
    • Updated splash, launcher and mission preview images for FSX:SE versions.

    Multiplayer, networking and communications

    • Gamespy networking now replaced by new Steam networking.
    • Game chat now integrated with Steam chat
    • Friends/Banned lists now integrated with Steam.
    • Game invites now use Steam.
    • Host networking defaults to a single port 6112.

I bought it for $5 and used it for a bit but I quit using it. Seems like a pain in the butt. You have to be online to access and use this version I believe? What would happen if I didn't have internet access for a couple of days, change of service or something? I simply don't like it also because its a pain in the butt to install and use. The locations of the folders...I had to install scenery into the Steam FSX folder itself to get it install in the scenery library. A couple of addons I bought didn't work also so I went back to the gold edition and use this exclusively for now.

Thank you for demystifying an important question and sharing this information. It is difficult sometimes to stay abreast with everything and folks out there take it for granted that we should know every nut, bolt and washer of the vast field of flight simulation. This article is very informative and I would like to conclude my comment by thanking you once more Nels Anderson, also for your top-notch repaints that we download and use.

I will no longer buy any game that uses Steam. All Steam offers are ads you have to watch before you play your game. And as you stated, you have to be online to access Steam. Thus if you have only the Steam version of any game, you can't play if you're not online. Steam support is a joke, too. In their train simulator, half of the trains would let me get 'into' the train to operate it. Steam's support people told me to just use the other trains. I've quit using any games I had through Steam, and if I am considering purchasing a game I check first to see if it mentions using Steam. If so, I don't buy it.

I have FSX installed but use it only very occasionally. For me, FS2004 (FS9) remains the favourite. "Steam" sounds horrendous!

Actually, contrary to what people assume (or "feel" based on the name Steam), there are many witnesses including myself who can attest to the overall performance increase and smoothness that came with the Steam Edition. Compiler change alone has brought some noticeable change to the system.

The Steam Edition is essentially same as the Box version and most, if not almost everything, addons work just fine if you have fresh install of SE. I recently wiped my PC clean and started a completely fresh FSX-SE only install and I am PLEASANTLY surprised with how well this thing is rolling.

There are very promising interviews from guys like ORBX who have personally met and saw what Dovetail has done, and will be doing, with FS platform. FSX-SE now shows a hope of putting new breath into FSX, albeit small, that may really get us some nice enhancements down the road.

Steam itself may be a turnoff for some people, but the path looks very promising. I am in full support of SE.

Currently I have Both Versions Installed...Disk and Steam..I have transferred my years of accumulation from Disk to steam..with no problem..And Am Pleased with both....Steam has saved FSX for future Simmers..One just has to try to locate and buy a new boxed FSX GOLD...and now it is Really GOLD!.Got No problems..All OK for me..If Steam goes bust? will always have the disks..until they wear out...Thnx!

Forbes reports that Valve/Steam is highly profitable, and it's been valued at $2-$4 billion, depending on which analyst's report you want to believe. I don't think they're going to go bust anytime soon.

FSX is going/gone out of print, so unless you want to pay the astronomical prices for the last remaining copies on disc, FSX SE is the only way to go now.

There's always "Steam is the great Satan!" posts from people who don't want to accept that the day of disc-based software are quickly coming to an end. I use Steam for their train simulators, and have no problems. It's reported that Steam has 75 million registered users. Not all are active, I'm sure, and Steam often doesn't post updates and service packs like we train simmers would like.

I don't run FSX SE, but I'm glad FSX hasn't gone completely out of print like Microsoft Train Simulator did, and that's thanks to Steam.

Bash Steam all you want, but I think Steam is great! I also bought FSX:SE when the $5 sale was on, and although I use P3D2 as my main sim, I've tried out the steam edition and it's great - just have to be patient as the addon compatibility issues get ironed out over time. Add XP10 into the list of "games" I have on Steam.

      Team Fortress 2 anyone?

I find it funny the "Steam bashers" keep pointing out problems I have never seen with FSX-SE or any other Steam Games (Ubisoft games excluded). If your going to bash steam, at least bash it for something it actually does horribly. Like Quality Control on early access and green light games.
