Chicago Midway International Airport (KMDW) is a small yet busy commercial airport surrounded by the Chicago urban area about eight statute miles southwest of downtown. Occupying only 320 acres, this efficient airport handled more than 20 million passengers in 2013 according to the Chicago Department of Aviation, which makes it among the busier 25 airports in the United States.

Midway is a major hub for Dallas-based Southwest Airlines. It also serves Air Trans, Delta, Frontier, Porter, Sun Country, and Volaris Airlines. Destinations include cities in Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean islands and throughout the United States

Two of its five runways handle commercial airliners, two handle general aviation and air taxi, and one handles light general-aviation aircraft. Its longest runway is 13C/31C at 6,522 feet (1,989 meters), and its shortest runway is 13L/13R at 3,859 feet (1,177 meters).

The airport has 43 passenger gates on three concourses, two general-aviation facilities with multiple hangars, and several maintenance hangars. All Midway's cargo is "belly cargo" according to the Midway Airport official website, meaning it is carried in the bellies of passenger airliners. No cargo airlines use this airport, and no terminal is dedicated exclusively to cargo operations. More than 26 thousand tons of such cargo was handled in 2013.

Satellite views show how cramped this airport is amid thoroughly built-up commercial and residential areas on all four sides, leaving no space whatsoever for expansion. Urban airports such as Midway, New York LaGuardia, and Reagan Washington National were begun decades ago when their sites were outside the urban areas, and those areas have developed densely around them. Nowadays they are hemmed in by urbanization.

Aircraft taking off and landing at Midway cause considerable noise and hazards. More than 20 airliners have crashed into residential areas outside Midway since 1936. The most unusual occurred in December 2005 when a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700 slid off Runway 31C in a snowstorm and stopped in the busy intersection of 55th Street and Central Avenue just outside the airport's northwest corner, killing a six-year-old child.

This airport is also congested on the ground. Pilots are advised to be alert to runway crossing clearances, and they are required to use Mode C transponders on all taxiways and runways and to read back all runway holding instructions.

Venez Scenery's Chicago Midway International Airport

Venez Scenery says its Chicago Midway International Airport was recreated according to real satellite and photographic images "to make made this reconstruction equal to reality." It further says its Chicago Midway scenery is frame-rate friendly. This scenery is for FSX and P3D. I reviewed the FSX version.

The first aspect to catch my attention is the photo-realistic ground texture because its makes the airport look realistic from only a few hundred feet up. It also defines the scenery area on the airside and groundside.
