Interview With Glenn Johnson FSX Scenery Developer

    Conducted by Dominic Smith

    Development

When did you start developing for flight simulators and what got you interested in it?

I became interested in getting a private pilot's license back in 1998. At the time, I didn't have enough money, or time to invest in obtaining a license. As a result, I decided to try the flight simulator route until I saved up enough money. I purchased Microsoft's Flight Simulator 98 and have been hooked on the flight simulator experience ever since. I eventually upgraded to FS2004 and was initially impressed with the amount of airport sceneries that were included. After a year of flying, I became disappointed in FS2004's lack of detailed sceneries for small to mid-sized airports, especially for my home town of New Orleans, LA. At that time, I owned a small T-shirt / graphic design business so I had some prior knowledge of how to manipulate textures. That's when I decided to create my own version of KMSY, which inspired me to create sceneries for other airports across the globe.

Tell us about the nature of your designs and what you do?

I primarily enhance and recreate airport sceneries for the Microsoft FSX platform. I enhance the standard FSX airport scenery by adding "photoreal" ground textures. I also align the airports aprons, runways and taxiways to match the real life airports. The airline gate assignments are taken from the latest information that is listed on the airports' web site. Recently, I started adding real photo textures to airport buildings to give my sceneries the "as real as it gets" feeling in FSX.

What do you consider your best or most popular work?

My most popular work seems to be a toss-up between John F. Kennedy International Airport (KJFK), and Los Angeles International Airport (KLAX). I've received numerous emails with requests for updates for both of these airports, and as such, I plan on releasing updates before the end of the year. I consider my best work to be my last project, KDAL, Dallas Love Field Airport. KDAL showcases some of the latest scenery building techniques, including dynamic shadowing, bump texture mapping and reflective window texturing.

What do you find to be the most challenging aspect of a project?

The most challenging aspect for me personally, is with finding the available free time to create high quality airport aprons and taxi ground textures. Due to a pretty hectic work schedule, I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to creating and mapping out of the airport ground textures. If someone would like to help me with the ground textures, then that could solve that problem.

What have been your favorite projects?

So far, my favorite airports are KMSY, KLAX, KSAN and KDAL.

What software packages and tools do you use to develop?

I currently use three programs to create my sceneries. These include: Google SketchUp, SBuilder X, and Airport Design Editor FSX Edition (ADE). These are all freeware programs that have helped me to keep my sceneries free to the public.

Do you develop payware/freeware or both and why?

I have always admired and appreciated the people that created all of the wonderful freeware add-ons for FSX, and as soon as I learned how to create Microsoft Flight Simulator scenery, I didn't hesitate to contribute my work to the flight simming community.

Always interested in "reading" the face behind the name!

Is there any way to correct the runway numbering at KOAK? Rwy 29 now Rwy 30 etc.?

      Thanks.
