European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition - 2013

    By Daniel Linton

Yesterday was the last of the three day European Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (EBACE 2013). It was held at the Palexpo and Geneva International Airport in Geneva, Switzerland. EBACE is jointly hosted by the European Business Aviation Association (EBAA), the leading association for business aviation in Europe, and the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), the leading voice for the business aviation industry in the United States. This three-day event features exhibits, aircraft displays, and education, maintenance & operation sessions.

Since I was unable to attend this year's EBACE, like many others I found myself searching the web sites for information on what took place at the show. I was looking for an article to summarize what the show was about, what new aircraft got announced and give a little overview of the aircraft. After hours of reading and searching I gathered together the bits and pieces I found interesting and summarized the information here. It's a compilation of data gathered from the EBACE site, manufacturer's sites, press releases and other short articles as well as at lot of follow-up searches. These are the highlights and information I found interesting.

This year the event hosted 12,353 delegates and 460 exhibitors with names like Airbus, Beechcraft, Boeing, Bombardier, Cessna, Cirrus, Dassault, Eclipse, Embraer, Gulfstream, HondaJet, Jetcraft, Netjets, Piaggio Aero Industries, Pilatus Aircraft, Piper Aircraft to mentioned a few. They showcased 52 aircraft this year. The event is the largest educational event in European aviation industry. On the final day, a delegation of more than 30 CEOs from local Geneva companies joined the EBAA and NBAA for a briefing on how business aviation can help their companies compete and succeed. They are then given a tour of the exhibits and static displays. CEO's are not the only ones to get special treatment however, as 40 university students from Spain, Belgium and Switzerland also attended to the convention to mark what they call - Student Day.

Companies usually save some big news announcements for events like EBACE and there were no shortage of those this year, especially in the area of new aircraft.

    Bombardier Challenger 350 Jet

Bombardier launched a new midsize business jet called the Challenger 350. NetJets has already placed an order for 75 of them with an option for 125 more. Steve Ridolfi, president of Bombardier Business Aircraft, said that "The Challenger 350 jet" will take the Challenger family to new heights. They claim it will be the super-midsize jet "climb leader" with the ability to reach 41,000 feet in 18 minutes surpassing the current leader, the Learjet 60.

That power comes from two Honeywell HTF7350 engines that produce 500 pounds more thrust on the same fuel as the HTF7000 used on the Challenger 300. Movie star and Bombardier pilot, John Travolta has already been working as a flight-test pilot to help get it certified. They feel it is the world's best-selling super-midsize jet, offering increased performance, improved engines and landing gear and all-new interior and advanced avionics. It will sell for $25.8 million.
