The U.S.S. Enterprise CVN-65 is a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier in service with the United States Navy since 1961. It participated in the Cuban Missile Crisis, the Vietnam War, Iraqi Freedom, and numerous other naval activities. Already the longest-serving ship in the U.S. Navy and the second-longest commissioned ship after the U.S.S. Constitution, the Enterprise is scheduled for decomissioning in December 2012.

This aircraft carrier is the eighth United States naval vessel named "Enterprise." Earlier Enterprises served in the U.S. Revolutionary War, the Barbary War, and World Wars I and II. The name "Enterprise" was also used on a steamboat that participated in the Battle of New Orleans, a balloon that served in the U.S. Civil War, a U.S. space shuttle, and a fictitious spaceship.

The U.S.S. Enterprise is an unusual vessel:

    • World's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier
    • World's only aircraft carrier with more than two nuclear reactors
    • Longest naval vessel in the world
    • First nuclear-powered ship to engage in combat
    • Only ship of her class
    • Longest service of any U.S. aircraft carrier
    • First nuclear-powered aircraft carrier to be decommissioned (December 2012)

Other interesting facts about the U.S.S. Enterprise CVN-65:

    • Zuni missiles on an F-4 Phantom detonated while being armed on the Enterprise in 1969, detonating bombs and missiles on other aircraft, which killed 27 crewmen and injured 120 others.
    • It sailed around the world in 1989-1990.
    • It underwent the largest and most complex overhaul of any U.S. Naval vessels in 1998.
    • This massive ship ran aground on a sandbar in San Francisco Bay in 1982 and waited for the tide to rise.
    • It captured 75 Somali pirates in 2011.
    • "CVN" stands for Carrier, Fixed-wing Aircraft, Nuclear Powered.
    • Its nickname is "Big E."

I found it a little confusing with the format but just to the right there is a drop down menu with 4 pages of review.

I am not sure what the deal is with SDB if they use to be with Alpha Sim, but all of their scenery including this is former Alpha Sim scenery modified for FSX with a modified FSX price tag, the thing about this is they offer the only US military bases that asside from the free ware is slightly better in some cases but not much. Im not real happy with their products BUT if you want military bases a simmer is sort of stuck. There is always a choice. But a little research goes a long way in this hobby. After 30 years in it, its not to tough to spot certain things. There are two devs out there that exploit the old AS products, with a little re-do of the eye candy and the prices are embarrasing for the products involved. There was a big sham involved with AS just before its demise and certain devs branched off to form another group same products same pricing slightly modified. But again its a choice. If you want it bad enough your gonna buy it.

The FS9 release is indeed the old Alphasim version that was available for only a couple of years while the original designer, Carl Edwards ("ninjamouse" in the forums for those who were around back then), was marketing his products through Alphasim. Since it was removed from the Alphasim catalog it has been widely available via pirate sites. The "new" FS9 release corrects a few visual problems found with the original. It doesn't claim to be anything else or anything more. For those who feel better about paying for the software products they use, it is available again and at the original price. With inflation that actually makes it cost less.

The new FSX version is an almost complete rebuild using the old FS9 source code files as a starting point. The files were given by Carl Edwards to Team SDB Scenery to use however they saw fit. It is designed to make use of all FSX/Acceleration carrier features "out of the box" and for those who want a bit more realism there is also an Advanced version. The user manuals for both versions have been freely available since the original release earlier this summer for anyone to review before purchase.

I purchased it and find it worthwhile, just havnt got the advanced features working yet, and i dont know why. Probably something simple. But the one thing possibly missed with the advanced features it adjust the catapault and arrestor wires based on aircraft weight. Now just to see it actually work. The default carrier dosent care if you are a light weight glider of a boeing 747 they all get thrown off at the same speed. which means you often have to reduce the throttle to stop going to fast.

This seems like an overpriced alternative to Javier Fernandez's carriers with AICarrier. Only a few more features can be customized. If it works for you, that's great. I'm just not ready to spend money on something I can get for free.

      Excerpt from the downloadable manual:

      Advanced Versions

      Features

The Advanced versions of the Enterprise include additional features developed by Sylvain Parouty. These systems greatly increase the realism of the FSX carrier experience but do require manual editing of certain FSX configuration (.cfg) files.

      The Advanced features include:
      1. LSO voice on approach and trap
      2. Catapult launch triggered using brakes trigger on joystick (rather than the default Acceleration Shift + Spacebar keystrokes)
      3. Reduced (more realistic) catapult launch speed tailored to the individual aircraft (as opposed to the too fast default Acceleration launch).
      4. FLOLS with settable glide slope (preset to 3.5 degrees) and new night lighting

It appears I have rubbed the supposed CEO of SDB the wrong way. He demands a public apology.
I am sorry that I did not go into more detail and present the facts ahead of time to back up what I wrote.
Here is what you do to make it real simple and less work for me load up fs9 find the scenery for both past Alphasim and SDB. Do the same for FSX spend a couple of hours going through the files, take a look at the AI aircraft and the flight paths look at the afcads, dimensions. Just start there you won’t have to go far. I highly recommend Barksdale AFB, Griffith, and Bunker Hill. Dover, Langley.
I also did not deter anyone from buying any product. I presented an alternative.
      It’s not rocket science.
And lastly no mickeyd I did not pirate any of the software I purchased it.
PS Good luck getting any support. Especially if you bought it from an outside vender.

mickeyd, i think you missread my post. I just cant get the advanced features to work,my statement referred back to the default carriers. The closest i have got it to work was the launch guy raise his arm, than just stood there. I have had 3 days fiddling but i am persistent. Updated gauge and all things s per doc. Would just like to se it work,

The old Alphasim Enterprise was every good and I used it a lot in fs9. I had even made AI Traffic myself, using aircraft of an older period, like Crusaders, Phantoms, a visiting FAA Gannet, etc etc.
That said, there is Forrestal carrier somewhere for fs9 that works ok in fs9 and which I found by chance once. Someone should do that class of carriers, and the Midway class too after refits with angled decks and other mods. I would love the Roosevelt and the Midway with Demons on them and the Coral Sea when they pounded Libya from the Med. I was on board it then and saw them arming up.

CVN Stands for Carrier Vessel, Nuclear. Noted on the first page of the review, V as in "Fixed wing aircraft" is only used in Squadron designations.

Carriers carry both fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft.
