This time they didn't have control. The war room was in Washington D.C. at the Omni Shoreham Hotel. More than 100 war experts sat at computers controlling and monitoring the battle. If I hadn't jumped on a plane and flown to Washington D.C. to see it for myself, I would not have believed it.
A duplicate war room was set up in Palm Springs, California for the next four days. A T1 line was hooked into each location, while several hundred people hooked on and launched their plans for mass destruction. Each person had his or her own code name (callsign) and required a badge to enter the room. Once inside it was like stepping back in time. A virtual battle was racing across the screens of every computer. It was a battle being renacted in the World War II arena, using World War II aircraft or better known to this community as - WarBirds!

WarBirds Conference 1999

Once a year, WarBird enthusiasts from all around the world gather in two locations to battle it out face to face. For four straight days (with many people going 24 hours straight) these people have a chance to study techniques, research information, and meet the other team members in their squadron for the first time.
But they were not just playing against each other, they had the rest of the world in there as well. WarBird servers located in North Carolina at iMagic Entertainment, Inc. run 24 hours a day to keep online community playing in what appears to be the most advanced online game to date. While these people attended the WarBirds Con of 1999, thousands of their comrades from around the globe where at home playing along also. Messages quickly flashed across the screen from every part of the globe as aircraft darted in and out of enemy fire. Communications came on to a screen one minute from across the room, and the next from across the globe.

WarBirds and Dawn of Aces

WarBirds is a MEGAplayer simulation of World War II aerial combat. Hundreds of players can fly simultaneously in each of several arenas, dogfighting and bombing enemy targets. You choose any of four sides to do battle for, select from dozens of planes and variants to fly, and take to the skies to fight for the glory of yourself and your comrades.

The goal of WarBirds is to capture enemy air bases by destroying their defenses and landing paratroopers to take over the base.
