  1. Hey everyone, hoping you can help an amateur out please - if I was building for me I wouldn't be so cautious and have a good idea of a non-VR set up, but I'm not and I don't know VR so... Budget (including currency): Fundraising towards required total, prioritising plus stretch goals, although "reasonably justifiable" cost. Country: UK Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: P3D, DCS World, MSFS2020, etc - potentially with VR element Other details: A charity youth group I'm involved with are looking to upgrade their flight simulator set up, as it currently has an HD7970 and AMD 5800K installed and is running FS2004 - pretty sure that we can't upgrade this platform well enough so looking to replace. We currently have a mock-up cockpit with 2x square TFT monitors one inside for pilot and one rear view for instructor/audience, although we occasionally output to a projector. All is built into a mock cockpit fuselage setup. We're looking to create one (or potentially one new and one partially upgraded) PC to run more modern software. Stretch goal is to get a VR Set up and possibly 2 new towers. Priority is to have a PC that can run P3D standalone on a desktop, which could potentially be transplanted into the fuselage. If the existing tower can be made to run P3D for initial training and practice fairly easily and cheaply then we would look to build a second PC to supplement as the "all singing" model inside the fuselage. Stretch goal for fundraising would be a VR headset (advice of if it could be swapped between the two towers please) and some new monitors. We also sometimes run it on a petrol (gasoline) generator when we take the set up to events and shows, which hasn't been a problem but I recently came across something suggesting some sort of power filter would be recommended? We don't need 4k Ultra settings, probably 1440p Medium would suit capped at 60fps. Ray tracing abilities not a factor. Online play via ethernet maybe for something like DCS World, but not live weather/traffic or anything like that. RGB frame boost not necessary. Soooooo I guess I'm asking for please: Advice on a set up to run the required software without VR Anything over and above that would be needed to goVR. Could a VR set be easily switched between 2 PCs if we don't use the same tower standalone and in the mockpit? Which VR set for value-for-money and longevity of support (or rather, low likelihood of needing to upgrade other stuff if the VR needs replacing), preferably without requiring nonsense like signing into a Meta account if that's actually a thing with Occulus What are the options for displaying an instrument cluster on its own screen and/or being able to have someone in VR with a different view, possibly with PiP for the VR view, to an external audience? New PC: Mobo CPU GPU NVME RAM "Power filter"? I'm not sure we'd benefit from going Alder Lake over Zen 3 at this point - although AM4 is on its way out, the extra mobo and RAM cost for 12th Gen Intel seems a stretch here, and we're not looking at keeping up with game releases too much... Opinions welcome though! Case, fans, and accessories are less of an issue for selecting. May go prebuilt anyway if the costs stack up. We have a couple sets of HOTAS controls, but a new set complete with pedals may be a reasonable ask as well for in the cockpit - I'm sure I remember the rudder pedals having a mangled PS2 connector the last time I opened it up! Obviously the monitors need renewing but size will depend on any remodelling we might do on the chassis. BUT we will want to keep a dual output of front screen/VR/Projector plus a rear monitor. Also, if anyone knows the possibility of PiP or side-by-side display output when someone is in a VR headset, to display what they see + an external view of the aircraft would be great please. I'm sure I've seen it, but the current internal screen could be kept as instrument cluster only (if resolutions won't screw up - otherwise we could look for something small, but higher res). I'm not au fait with the technicalities of setting multi-view type things up wrt flight simulators, but with enough research knowing where to look I could myself there. Bit long winded, appreciate you taking the time to read through an I hope it makes sense, but please throw and extra questions at me and I look forward to reading what you all come up with!
