beroun
Hi, It is the first time this happened to me and it is intermittent (does not happen always): When opening FS2004 it stays at the main screen - see picture, never opens. I have to terminate (end task) through Task Manager, usually reboot the PC and then it might start OK, sometimes needs more attempts. Must say that I have number of add-on scenery and aircraft but all the files are properly placed. Also use no cd patch. So just wandering if anyone knows what could cause this. Many thanks Peter Peter Bendl ex. British Airways
tiger1962
If you have your FS9.exe set to run as administrator, try renaming or deleting your FS9.cfg file and re-launching FS9. beroun
Hi, thanks tried as suggested. Assuming you mean the FS9.cfg file, which is in User/Application Data/Roaming/Microsoft/FS9... Have renamed that one, started FS and no boot up, same as above. So looked at the files above and there was another FS9.cfg created but the file was blank. So probably starting FS did place the file there but did not fill it? So I have deleted it and renamed the original file back to FS9 and the FS started OK. Curious, what will be happening next, since this snag is intermittent, sometimes FS starts, sometimes not? Peter Bendl ex. British Airways
HoratioWondersocks
Assuming you don't start with the default flight and location ,perhaps you could try doing that. Maybe there is something about the flight your Sim is attempting to load thats causing grief. Deleting your fs9 cfg and letting the sim rebuild it would also achieve the same result ,but you say that doesn't work. I assume this isn't a variation of the windows update issue that has been causing a lot of problems for a lot of simmers recently. Techos will know. I ain't no Techo So can't help there. PhantomTweak
I've found that sometimes, for whatever reason, mine won't load. All I have to do is open the FSX.cfg file with notepad, and delete the line [uSERINTERFACE] SITUATION=FLIGHTS\OTHER\FLTSIM And then it boots right in, no problem. Just a thought... beroun
Hi Gent's thanks a million for all your responses. I actually tried again, deleted fs9 cfg file and started FS. This time I was more patient (I guess) and yes the new cf9 cfg was created. All seems to be working fine now. Although I had to adjust all the settings to my original setup, but no big deal. Also ref Pat's post, my user interface data in the newly created fs9 cfg looks like this: [uSERINTERFACE] SITUATION=C:\Users\Peter\Documents\Flight Simulator Files\Lear Default so probably is not causing the problem. Thanks again, all seems OK now Regards Peter Peter Bendl ex. British Airways
PhantomTweak
Ok, I was just trying to think of any little thing, as they say... Glad you got it going though :) Enjoy! beroun
Hi, regret I spoke too soon. The same problem appeared again, even after I removed fs9.cfg file and let FS create the new one. Just the Flight Simulator 2004 splash screen appears and no boot-up. This time I cannot start it at all, even after number of attempts. So have followed Microsoft http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888846 and removed FS9 completely. Plan to do reinstall in the near future. Fortunately got all the stuff backed up, so hope I will be flying again soon. Peter Bendl ex. British Airways
PhantomTweak
It seems like for some reason, I wind up doing a complete un-install/re-install about once a year. I learned early on to make sure I back up (at the very least) the Aircraft, Addon Scenery, Effects, Gauges, Scenery, and Texture folders. Makes getting it back to what I want/like a LOT easier and faster. There are SO many goodies... beroun
Absolutely agree Pat. I got three back-ups of full FS9. One stored remotely:) One does not want to throw all the effort away....... Peter Bendl ex. British Airways
HoratioWondersocks
From what I remember there are various options when unin Fs9. One removes the bulk of the program but leaves a core of main files (something like that) The other removes ALL parts of the program. If you select the first option you may simply be back to square one with your no startup woes. You may have to go for the FULL unin of the program so you get a fresh canvas to work on. PS Techies Could the OPs problems be something that the registry tool might fix? Cheers Andy
beroun
Hi Andy, see my other post, I did a successful reinstall and have summarized the process there. Cheers Peter Peter Bendl ex. British Airways
betelgeuse
Seems like some W7 updates stop some games from starting. You don't say which OS you have. Anyways, this might help. I had the same problem with FS9 not starting. Removing this update solved it. https://forums.techguy.org/threads/september-2015-windows-updates-kb3086255-breaks-many-games.1155534/ http://ivao.websafe.dk/img/promo/promo_sm.jpghttp://status.ivao.aero/R/317780.png John
PhantomTweak
Just a hint... As soon as you get done completely with the fresh install, save a copy of it off someplace. That way, should this situation ever arise again, just copy the copy, so to speak, back in once you get done uninstalling. It's a lot faster way to install than disks. Then, put your backed-up "stuff" in a little bit at a time. It will help isolate what caused you to uninstall in the first place. Might help next time you have this problem. Good flights, and happy flying to all! Pat☺ [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! beroun
Thanks guys, I am OK now after I did the complete re-install see my https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/showthread.php?294277-FS2004-Complete-Reinstall. All works perfect. Need to watch for updates of course. Mainly bit scared of W10, which is my upcoming PC operating system. I desperately need FS2004 to work on it and understand there are some issues. Peter Bendl ex. British Airways
