Windows 7 Updates

Recommended Posts

For the last few weeks I’ve reinstalled Windows 7, many times, because every time windows 7 upgrades, Flight Simulator 2004, will not operate.

The only way to get it to operate is to restore to an earlier date, every day.

To solve this problem, I reinstall windows 7, and block all updates.

I’ve tried to contact Windows, but they contently, don’t have a forum that is connected to Microsoft HHQ.

Any help short of replacing the computer would be appreciated.

Thanks.

As RCChopper has stated read the thread he linked - it has a lot of useful information. However, simply unchecking the box will stop the KB installing once - when WU runs again it will be in the list and ticked to be installed again. Hiding the update will force WU to ignore it and therefore not download it again. As the thread is long read the thread entry linked below on how to hide the update.

All FS2004 users are having this problem. You can blame Microsoft Updates. Here is easiest way to use your FS2004 until Windows updates sends a fix..... Go to Control Panel and navigate through links until you get to Uninstall Updates. You will see numerous updates listed. Select and un-install (one by 1) all the Security Updates for Microsoft Windows that are dated during Sept 2015. (there are about 12 - 13). Keep selecting, Restart later. When finished, do a re-start. Now turn off your automatic up dates setting. fisheye3.

OK .... Windows update caused problem, wait for Windows update to solve problem (???), remove ALL (???) September Security Updates, turn OFF automatic updates, and then ..... wait for that Windows update?

gwillmot, send me the duck. I win.

I wonder how much more will be, or needs be posted about this issue considering how much is already posted. And such a simple fix really. fisheye3 have you heard of the no CD fix?

It depends on the particular Forum; some say "NO", some say 'Maybe', some say 'Yes, but don't talk about it here'...

At some point, the decision will have to be made by the higher ups whether to promote the 'non-PC' method or not.

That is the worst way. You can blame SafeDisk.

Uninstall the singe update that disabled SafeDisk.

Hide that single update in WU.

Continue to get the rest of WU.

There will not be a fix for this through WU because MS is no longer supporting SafeDisk due to security concerns.

Ahhhh, KB 3086255. I had the same problem. Simply unchecking the update and allowing the rest works...once. However, let this install go through next time (Windows update is insidious, it will keep trying to install every time). You must manually turn on a secdrv.sys driver once installed.

From command prompt (black window), type sc_config_secdrv_start= auto, if you substitute auto for disabled, then FS9 won't work regardless whether you are in admin or not. There is an alternate way to do this via editing your registry, but I shy away from messing with my registry, too many crazy things can happen.

Windows acknowledged that after this update, some "older video games may cease to function".

There are none so deaf as those who will not hear! How often has this been mentioned in this forum?

So true...and none so blind as those who will not read. This flight sim forum has turned into a Microsoft fix-it shop.

Once and for all folks...either uninstall and HIDE the update or simply get the previously mention fix file. No command prompts, no registry hacks. Need more details? Read the many posts. It's all been said.

Some users are having the problem. Yes you can blame MS updates. No, updates will never send a solution because the update in question is blocking a vulnerability with old DRM routine.

There are solutions to the problem which is caused by one update, not all of them. Take your time and read the forums.

Aye matey .... but after several days of wrangling with UPS and FEDEX, I must say I'm very sorry as they won't ship live critters. I'll have to offer a homing pigeon next time ......

  • 3 weeks later...
I'm new to this forum. I found the problem update and did a HIDE UPDATE, but it still comes back next time. I now search the updates offered first, and then uncheck KB3086255 (the problem update). Then I install remaining updates until next time updates are offered. I have no idea what a no CD fix is. Can anyone instruct how to with easy steps?

I have that update hidden too and after about a month it reappears in the list of available updates. I have no idea why the hiding isn't permanent but I just unselect it, hide it again and move on.

As far as the fix, here is a link to our good friend Tom Gibson's forum that explains it well. You will also find a link to the fix. Read Tom's posting carefully. Tom did an excellent job explaining it. And thank you Tom for doing that.

Hi,

You're welcome. The reason it doesn't stay hidden is that MS keeps re-releasing the patch, just to get it added to machines like yours that have hidden it previously...

Tom, that's what I kind of suspected but I appreciate your confirming that.

What I do now is when new updates become available, I compare them to a list of about 10 updates that have been identified by others as not desirable. Those on my list get hidden again.
