Who here uses Active sky Next? Is it worth the money? or should I be looking at Opus?

ASN is an excellent weather engine. I've used Active Sky, in one version or the other, ever since it was released and been quite happy with it. ASN, in addition to all the weather functions, provides an interface to the PMDG 737/777 and iFly 737/744 for weather radar and to the 777 for winds aloft import.

I purchased mine a couple of weeks ago at a discount fron PC AVIATOR. Try there and see if its still on sale.

Yes it looks great in FSX-SE

I've used AS 2012 and then AS Next when it came out.

Both recommended but, for some reason, AS 2012 has a better map display.

So, I use AS 2012 for looking at the local weather before walking the dog, and AS Next for FSX!

Best of both worlds... :D

Hi Lord_Nibbo,

I have ASN and I think it's great. I will qualify that statement by saying that I have not tried Opus but they do (did?) offer a free trial version. ASN offers a free trial too!

Be aware that ASN doesn't supply it's own textures - it'll use whatever you have (default or other 3rd party, such as REX or freeware). I don't know about Opus.

I also have REX, but only use it for it's excellent textures (the weather engine is nowhere as good as ASN though).

ASN's weather depictions and changes are seamless - I find absolutely none of the stutters, pauses, or flashes that occur when using the REX weather engine.

Opus, from what I understand, also offers some kind of dynamic head movement thingy in response to turbulence and such that is similar to EZDok. You might want to consider that before making a decision.

ASN seems to always try to improve their product - I keep getting notifications of new versions and new beta versions being offered, so it seems that they listen to customer's requests and suggestions.

My only negative experience with ASN is when one time I updated to a new version and it caused problems with starting ASN until a new fix was issued. The time that I couldn't run ASN was horrible because I find the program soooo friggin' good! But, their tech support was great!

I have a lotta love for ASN!

Hope this helps,

I've used both. Opus is OK, and does fine as far as general wx and clouds and such.

But winds aloft can be erratic, and constantly shift around as you pass reporting

stations. Going from normal cruise to overspeed in the blink of an eye, and often

back and forth as far as direction is common with Opus.

ASN is much more stable as far as winds aloft. The main thing that spurred me to

buy it was to get wx radar in the NGX. But the much more stable winds aloft was

a nice bonus if you fly the tubeliners quite a bit like I do.

It's also much quicker at downloading and loading wx to the sim vs Opus.

I'd go with ASN. And you will be good to go for radar if you buy a plane that

supports it.
