Miami, The Tropical Paradise

Recommended Posts

This is a tribute to our good friend Aharon, who I feel so sorry for because he is apparently forced to fly in deplorable blizzard conditions all the time, based on all the blowing snow and icy runways in his spectacular screenshots.

So I invited Aharon to join me, on my American Airlines Flight 671 to Atlanta. We boarded on the ramp at beautiful, tropical, sun-drenched Miami International (KMIA), where our dispatcher has just alerted us to an unusual weather phenomenon which has suddenly sprung up out of a clear blue sky...

The following is the Captain's Cockpit Voice Recorder transcript from several significant spots during the short flight.

"I couldn't hear what the dispatcher said because of all the howling wind and blowing ... sunshine ... I'm pretty sure he said GO."

"I wonder why that Tower controller said 'Clear for takeoff and good luck with that...'"

http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u484/Hoggy_Dog/2015-5-31_2-59-13-838.png

"Something's wrong with this OAT gauge... according to this we need prop de-ice and pitot heat... in Miami..."

http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u484/Hoggy_Dog/2015-5-31_2-59-59-404.png

"Is it just me, or does the airport look somehow different today..."

http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u484/Hoggy_Dog/2015-5-31_3-1-0-574.png

"You know, this never happened until that Aharon guy came along... do you think he could've brought all this stuff here with him?"

http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u484/Hoggy_Dog/2015-5-31_3-13-49-58.png

"OK, that's about all of this I can take- I keep spilling my coffee! Tell Departure we need to return ASAP!"

http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u484/Hoggy_Dog/2015-5-31_3-13-11-92.png

"WHAT IN THE EVER-LOVIN' BLUE-EYED WORLD DOES TOWER THINK THEY'RE DOING? DID YOU SEE THAT???"

http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u484/Hoggy_Dog/2015-5-31_3-33-42-379.png

"Just a little more to go... I've just about had it up to HERE with all this blowing snow!"

http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u484/Hoggy_Dog/2015-5-31_3-34-29-588.png

"Thank the Wrights, the Pratts and the Whitneys, I think we're gonna make it!"

http://i1070.photobucket.com/albums/u484/Hoggy_Dog/2015-5-31_3-35-52-818.png

"Oh look, there goes Aharon's 747... I know it's his 'cause it's all snow-colored and it's blowing..."

Good post, Doug, but really unfair to Aharon. I've seen him bring heavy rain, clouds, even ice, all without the prerequisite snow that seems to be a trademark. To be truthful, nobody does snow better than Aharon!

KCD, ha ha ha ha thanks for your very kind words.

Great shots and storyline. Maybe not too farfetched, for that matter. I remember pulling into Mayport, Fla. returning from a Med Cruise in January and manning the rails in 22 degree weather. Freeze the Monongahela's off a brass monkey!:p

Still thinking about a new flightsim only computer!  ✈️

A fine set of foul weather shots Doug and an appropriate narrative to go with that round trip to KMIA! I sure like that American DAK too.  :D Remember that old Sting song "King of Pain". In your case it could be revised to "King of Rain (and snow)". :)

Great shots Doug, you got to love those old DC-3's especially the AA markings. I am glad that I am in the comfort of my cabin (Payson, AZ) up in the hills 1 hr north of Scottsdale 5,000 ft up, instead of being their in that cold snowy day. By the way you have to love the ha, ha's from KCD.

Thank you, KCD, Jan, wolf2, mrzippy, NMLW and Kdierken for your kind words...

..and thank you most of all to Aharon for your stunning screenshots, snow or no, your kind words and your sense of humor. I had a hunch you would "get it" and not be offended, and I'm glad I wasn't mistaken.

You are absolutely right, I have never seen the equal of his snowy shots- they are beautiful, and that's why I said this is a Tribute to him!

NAS Jacksonville was the home port of my VP squadron, and after I left the Navy I stayed there until a promotion took me to Hot-lanta. My son and grandchildren are still there. I have seen snow several times in Jax, although nothing on the order of the blizzards Aharon depicts so well, and my family there has reported snow 2-3 times in the past 10-15 years. So I am more than familiar with the NE Florida weather of which you speak!

Miami, however, is an entirely different kettle of Salsa... here's a quote from the Wiki: "Miami has never recorded any accumulating snowfall although there were dubious claims of snow flurries on January 19, 1977." That, of course, is why I invited Aharon there to fly with me... that and the fact that the Key West airport just isn't as pretty as Miami in FSX. :D
