How complicated is the PMDG 737NGX compared to....

Hi all. I am thinking about getting the PMDG NGX. I am not a huge fan of flying computers, but I think it will be a fun challenge to try to figure this one out. I've heard it is about as complex as you will get in a desktop simulator setup.

I already have the CaptainSim 777, 737, and 727; the QW 146/Avro, and, most recently, the AWESOME Coolsky DC-9.

I can get all these babies going from Cold and Dark, with all systems running and no annunciators indicating any issues, so how might the PMDG compare in terms of learning curve to these others?

Thanks!

About the only system not modeled in this aircraft is the weather radar. I'm a purist when it comes to flying it though. I use real world navigational routings, program the FMC,s etc. If merely wanting just to get it in the air and fly around, I don't think its much more complex than the others you've mentioned. You can also set it up any way you want to from cold and dark to ready for takeoff. Regards

And RNP RF legs. Both of which is on modelled on the iFly 737.

You might want to keep my YouTube Channel handy when you finally buy the 737NGX.

I've made several free 737NGX training videos and my latest is on the MCP (the auto pilot panel) which is now standing at 10 videos and I estimate I'll need about 8 more to finish the series!

Anyway, it sounds like you'll do fine with the other jetliners you've mentioned that you have flown. The NGX is no more complex but it is one of the most complex and complete flight simulators ever created for the desktop. My next sim will be the PMDG 777. That will be next year as right now I'm up to my ears in making the 737NGX training videos on a full time basis!

May have to give the Ifly version a try given that I'm thinking about a P3D switch. That HUD rocks on the PMDG though. Regards

  • 1 month later...

Apparently PMDG 737 is the most popular aircraft software worldwide, being a star of youtube. I've seen videos in all possible languages (Spanish, Russian, Chinese...) it is just overwhelming. I assume the popularity (besides being a good software) is also due to that it is a 737.

There is some really good stuff about it, the software is very user friendly, set up and ground services made accessible via FMS which is very cool. Others like Coolsky MD-80 are not as friendly at all. And others still, like Wilco's 737-3/4/500 are lease friendly with many panels/systems accessible only via 2D windows by pressing "shift+#". It does have the good modern VC visuals though.

Two other developers with "friendly software" approach I know of is Aerosoft with Airbus-X and iFly 747. But I don't see the iFly 747 picking up the degree of popularity shared by 737NGX and Airbus-X, although personally I see it being just as good. Perhaps because it is too big... not often you want to do an 8+ hour flight.
