FSX:SE Boats Have Infinite Rooster Tails!

Recommended Posts

Many, but not all  , ships and boats have really bizarre-looking water columns at their sterns, stretching upwards as far as the eye can see.

Here you can see a pair of destroyers/frigates sporting these odd-looking appendages, while the aircraft carrier (which is a mission objective) has nothing of the kind:

I see this in Free Flight and Missions, from all types of aircraft and in all views- VC, 2D cockpit and any exterior view.

Has anyone got any idea why I'm seeing this and how I can get rid of it?

Open up your ...\FSX\Effects folder and "sort by date modified"

Make sure you are in "details" view so you can see the dates.

Look at the end of the list (oldest files) for files with "wake" in the name, dated older than 2005.

At some time you have overwritten default effects with FS9 versions.

You can reclaim the originals from your FSX backup, if you have one.

Or there is a file in the library to repair default gauges that will also fix effects, Ibelieve.

This is a problem circa 2013. Here is text of forum posts.

FSX wake problem:

3-21-2013

'The offending file that you have added to your effects folder is fx_wake_l.fx..'

3-25-2013

Re-Install was not the answer. The problem is a EFFECTS file (fx_wake_l.fx) that is in your EFFECTS folder. This 'fix' applies to that EFFECTS file (and NOT to any 'fs_wake_1.fx'-which doesn't exist-even in FS9) and these changes would make the wake 'behave'. Sometimes an effect file will have errors or become corrupted when someone (other than original author) makes changes and includes it in an upload and you overwrite. This particular file has been around since 2007 and is found in both FS9 and FSX effects folder.

3-25-2013

All the fix does is restore the FSX version of that effect.

Yes, Napamule you are correct, that .fx file does exist in both versions of the sim.

However, just because they both exist does not mean they are identical.

In fact they are not identical and the root cause of this issue is that the FSX version was overwritten by the FS9 version at some point in time.

So now at least we can pin this down to the 'offending' fx file.

Thank you two for the solution. I found literally dozens of files in my Effects folder dated older than 2005! I had installed an airport scenery package that included some ships/boats plus some POsky airplanes on the same date and time shown for many of these older Effects files, including the culprit, fx_wake_l.fx. Also, I installed many WOAI airlines, and although I ran the tool to make the FS9 files in WOAI compatible with FSX, I don't think that tool did anything about updating any FS9 fx files.

In my backup copy of FSX, I found that the fx_wake_*.fx files were all dated 2006 and later, so I copied all files fx_wake_*.fx from backup to my live installation and the issue went away. :D This still leaves me with a ton of older-than-2005 Effects files, undoubtedly installed with scenery packages and/or freeware aircraft and/or WOAI, but I decided to leave them there unless I have other problems.

I'm only running UTX+GEX, both latest versions "Steam compatible" freshly downloaded & installed in January of this year, plus a few freeware airport packages of indeterminate age from the Library here. Because one of those airports was TNCM, and I think it included some boats around the airport, I suspect that could be where the FS9 wake files came from.

Thanks to you both for your help.

Hogg,

Glad to hear you solved this problem. I have 41 files in my FSX effects folder, dated from 2002 to 2005, and they don't cause any problems (ie: not just because of the date). OK? OK!
