New To FS2020 Rig Question

Hi Guys.. Been gone for a while after FSX .. I would like to try FS2020 .. My Current Rig is an :

 

HP ENVY Phoenix 860st

i7 6gen 6700k quad core 4.00 GHz

16GB Ram

2GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 960

How will this GPU deal with FS2020 .. Would hate to have to upgrade to the GTX970 ..

 

Also , when I purchase I see that it says for Xbox, Ill assume its for PC as well... ?

I am no expert, by any stretch, however, I think your GPU is WAY underpowered. There is an option (think via the MS store) that you can buy a pass for something like $1 month) and you can "try" out MSFS and see what happens. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Hi, surprisingly your GPU is over the minimum spec but just under the recommended spec. I wouldn’t expect too much though.. but as David said.. you can try the sim for £1 / $1 by signing up to the Xbox gamepass for the month’s trial. Just remember to cancel the pass before the month is up (it’s called Xbox gamepass but actually works on your pc)

 

If was going to upgrade though.. I certainly wouldn’t go from the GTX960 to the GTX970. The 970 would barely make any difference. I personally wouldn’t call that an upgrade as they are very cheap / basic cards compared to modern ones. I’d want something better than that. Maybe something like a GTX 1050ti. Still very cheap but probably worth it.

I don't think that's quite accurate, Steve.

 

A GTX770 (minimum spec) is a bit faster than a 960 and quite a bit faster than a 1050ti. And the 970 is substantially more powerful than a 960. Check this out:

It is confusing, but with Nvidia the 7, 9, 10, etc is the generation, and the 50(ti), 60, 70, etc is rank within the generation. So a bigger total number isn't necesarrily faster (although, sometimes it is). Hence, 770 > 1050ti. The 770 is an older card, but more powerful since it's higher in rank.

 

Sorry for the treatise, but I've seen this misunderstanding crop up a few times on this forum.

 

Anyway, it would seem to me that the 960 is actually slightly below minimum spec, based on my first link, above.

I will give some advice based on my experience. My system was built to a budget and has enough for FS2020 but not anything extra. My rig I3-10100 on a new board. With an m.2 storage card 500GB.

Nvidia GTX-1050.

Display 22 " 1920x1080 ASUS.

The GTX1050 is enough to run MSFS, but make sure you get at least 4GB on the video card. I am running at the Medium level of the graphics, with a few settings at High. I have checked the frame rate at it is in the 30 range.

This works well enough for me. I can't see any freezing or stuttering. And the terrain looks good to me. If you want to run at High graphics settings, you have to move up more on the video card. And more video card like that probably means a bigger power supply that has to connect to the video card.

Is the HP envy a laptop? That might be a problem with running at the CPU and GPU at high capacity and get enough cooling.
