VR GFX for MSFS2020

Recommended Posts

Hi,

Haven't flown flight sim for a few years now. Been waiting on MSFS2020. With the new UK scenery deciding on my upgrade options before purchase.

I have a Rift CV1. Are their any negatives to upgrading to the Rift S? I'm looking for better graphics and performance with MSFS2020?

I would also like to upgrade my 1070ti GFX. Is this necessary? What would be a sensible upgrade, best bang for buck. Not looking to go silly money. Have a budget 5-600 pounds?

Thanks,

Ted.

p.s. is there still a markey for FSX addons? Looking to sell my (near complete) VFRX scenery for UK.

Hi Ted,

I sold my Rift CV1 last year & bought the Reverb G2, so I can’t really comment on the Rift-S.

Going by reviews on YouTube the G2 is the best you can buy (for the money) but it is expensive. It is good though!

As far as graphics cards go. You may have to wait a while. They are in short supply at the moment & the prices are ridiculous. I’m guessing your current one is actually a GTX 1070 Ti ?

Also what are the other specs of your machine... CPU..RAM..etc?

What you could do in the mean time, is sign up for the Xbox game pass for one month. It is just £1 for the first month so you can see how well MSFS will run on your current system (remembering to cancel the game pass before the month is up)

You’ll only get the basic edition but it’s a good way to check it out.

As for the FSX market.. I doubt you will get much. I too have a few VFR discs for the uk & have thought about doing the same, but I don’t think it’ll be worth it. The default scenery in the new sim is so much better than the scenery we used to pay £100s for.

Regards

Steve

Another thought.. I don’t know what you’re feelings are towards Facebook but from 2023 the Rift CV1 and Rift-S will require a Facebook account for full functionality. Of course this is a change of their previous policy of only requiring an Oculus account.

I understand the headsets will still work but not all applications/updates will be available.

As well as my G2, I also own a Quest (first one) but I refuse to open a Facebook account. I guess I too will lose some functionality.

I’ll never buy the Quest 2 for that reason.

My experience with the Quest 2 has been pretty positive. The universe hasn't figured out a way to visually show whether the G2 is vastly superior to the Quest 2, so I am still confused about that. But either way, I love VR and am excited about its future.

There are many kinks still to be worked out right now, but they are manageable. If you don't spend a decent amount of time configuring your headset to exactly the specific settings needed, it will not work. What those "specific settings" are is not in any Microsoft manual anywhere. You have to google it. I am not very technically proficient though, and did manage to figure it out with a few hours of tinkering.

Hi Neil, glad you’re enjoying the Quest 2. The main reason I won’t get one is simply because of the Facebook requirements. I don’t suppose this is an issue with a lot of people though.

As for the big question as to which headset is best... they say the Quest 2 is a good all rounder, being able to take it anywhere etc.

But.. the G2 has a better resolution. All depends what it’s used for I suppose. There are tons of YouTube videos on the subject, which I’m sure you’ll have seen, like this one..

I understand some people don't like the Facebook connection. I personally don't mind it because I don't actually use Facebook, other than merely having an account. I've translated my name into a foreign alphabet so it's not even that easy to find my profile. Data privacy is a serious crisis in our societies so I am not undermining this concern at all--it is a valid concern. That said, most of us who have email accounts and credit cards are pretty much "on the grid" anyway, with these companies data-mining the crap out of us.

I have not watched all of the youtube videos so thanks for the link. I am curious about the better resolution from G2. But for now, I've made my Quest choice so given my non-infinite budget and a very skeptical wife, it will have to do for now. Let's see what happens in the coming year.

Steve, don't believe all you read about Facebook - I HAD to join it because my kids told me I was a Social Retard. As soon as I did, my account was hacked and my user name was changed to Deborah or something, and I couldn't change it back again for 3 months. The little sh*ts. Since then I've got in contact with relatives in Australia, and discovered that there are local Facebook Groups in my area where people post info about police speed traps, roadworks, and all kinds of ACTUALLY USEFUL stuff. Best of all is the banter such as this comment below from a genuine local news item, by some random guy to his best mate:

Thanks for that Deborah..er.. Tim :)

Nice ship!

I have family members who use Facebook regularly but I really don’t have much interest in it myself. The bit about the headsets annoys me slightly though. When I bought my Oculus Quest for example, they said you could have either a Facebook or an Oculus account.

They’ve since gone back on their word & said you must have a Facebook account (by 2023)

Not only that, but if you use anything but your actual name etc (be careful Neil) they will brick your headset so you can’t use it. No exceptions.

So.. any false details and the device you have paid for will stop working completely. I don’t think that’s fair.

Anyone buying a Quest 2 will have agreed to these terms but I didn’t when I bought my Quest 1 (or the Rift which I no longer have)

Yeah, that's fair enough but you really don't have to give Facebook any more info about yourself than any other website, and it's entirely up to YOU who you connect to etc.

I do use my real name.

I have simply translated it into a non-western alphabet, which is allowed by Facebook. If you are John Smith, just spell John Smith in Japanese, Chinese, Arabic or whatever you want. Google Translate is a nice tool.
