Need suggestions for new graphics card

Recommended Posts

Hello and thank you for your time. I have downloaded and installed FS2020 and it won't run. Doesn't get past the updates. Just shuts off, or seems to. I believe its my graphics card and I am in need of assistance in getting a new one. Let me start with my specs, I guess.

Dell XPS 8300 Desktop (out of the box)

Windows 10 64-bit

Intel® Core ™ i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz Processor

16.0 GB Memory

460W Dell PSU; 2 free 6 Pin Connectors

AMD Radeon HD 6670 with 1009MB Dedicated Video RAM GDDR5

500GB Standard Hard Drive

1TB SSD Hard Drive (would use this for FS)

1 and 2TB External Hard Drives

I am looking for a card with either 2MB or 4MB VRAM. The mother board has room for a double width card, probably up to about 10" long. I am concerned about overstressing the PSU and have no plans to get an additional PSU. Money is most definately a factor. I have no problem with buying a used card through eBay if the vendor is reputable. I have seen the minimum and recommended Graphics Cards, the Radeon RX 570-590 or the GeForce GTX 770-970 (min. and rec.) I am very confused when I do a search for one of the cards-I get a bunch of different names that look similar and pictures that are different. There must be more affordable cards that my computer can support, right?

Can you give me a list of a few cards that I might shop for? Would you know of a web site that I can enter my parameters and it narrows down the cards? I would really appreciate your time.

Thanks, Dave

Unfortunately, right now there really are no good choices for someone like yourself at this point. Foe example GTX 1660ti and RX 580 cards are both selling for more than twice the original price now, over $500. That is a ridiculous price for a GPU that is only going to provide acceptable performance at modest settings in FS2020. In addition, the constraint of a marginal PSU further limits what will work.

One thing I think may be confusing you, many assemblers provide each iteration of GPU. A RX 580 may be available from, MSI, Gigabyte, XFX, PowerColor, and Sapphire. The basic functionality is the same, but the quality of components used to assemble the design may vary substantially.

Because of a combined confluence of factors, there is a shortage of GPUs, and prices have become ridiculously exorbitant, even for submarginal versions.

My advice is to wait until spring or summer, when supply may increase, and prices moderate. You might want to save up for a new PC, as your current unit is going to limit your options. MS2020 is a demanding program. Trying to run it at minimum specs may not be a satisfying option?

THIS is what's going to drive many existing simmers to the Xbox version. Gaming PC components are overpriced for whatever reason and are likely to remain so for the same reason(s).

Cryptomining, like Bitcoin, is a major part of the problem. The latest Xbox and Playstations have had supply issues of their own too.

True, but an Xbox Series X packs the same punch as a $1500 PC for only $500 RRP.

For now. Give it a couple years and much like the Xbox One, the Series X will fall behind too. The consoles are a good option, but their specs will be fixed, which won't change in any significant way until the next generation are launched.

Will MSFS be developed beyond the capabilities of Xbox Series X before the next gen Xbox is launched?

I have a GTX 1050 Ti 4Gb and it runs MSFS on Medium settings at 18-21fps no problem.

I bet it will. Technologies like ray tracing will evolve well beyond the Series X's capabilities on the PC side, for example.

Time will tell, but ray tracing is part of DX12 due for update on PC ahead of the Xbox launch this summer.

It is still in its infancy and will require far more powerful hardware before it really takes off, which will appear in PCs before the consoles. And that is only one possibility as there will be others, such as better VR. Basically, the Xbox is largely fixed in how powerful it's hardware is, while PCs will keep evolving.

Also true, but Xbox doesn't have the huge overhead of Windows 10 to keep running in the background while it's also trying to run MSFS, and doesn't need the same power as a PC. ALL of the bang from those 500 bucks is going on running MSFS, in 4k at 60fps, and nowhere else.

Anyone familiar with the MSI GeForce GTX 1051 Ti Gaming x 4G? A few on eBay used for under $100.

Dave

I would try to look at the 4GB version of the GTX770; it handily outperforms the 1050ti for about the same price.

I ran it at medium settings for between 25 and 30 fps. More in the countryside. I'd have continued using it if I didn't stumble across a used 970, which the person was almost giving away.

Anyway, I was quite impressed with my 770, considering it was the minimum spec.

Tim, I think there is a significant chance prices come down after the pandemic abates. The cryptomining demand will keep pressure on prices for the top end, but the performance of AMD 6800 and 6800XT should put a little competition back to work. As the workforce and logistics improve following the pandemic, the lower end cards should start to come on in volume. I think the demand caught both companies a little off guard, and they were facing slowed manufacturing due to the pandemic. By summer the ridiculous pricing ought to ease a little, especially for the GTX 1660super and 1660ti and RX 5600, 5600XT, and 5700.
