FS9 VC runway touchdown zone

Hi All,

This is my first post, so i am hoping someone can help me. I've noticed in FS9, the zoom in VC is set default .50 Zoom. Now i like this zoom distance, however i have notice the details of the touchdown zone on runways don't appear until you are approx 1 to .5 Miles out. Its really annoying because it just looks like a blank runway until you are really close, and can't use them for reference.

If i change the zoom to 1, it appears much further out, which is perfect, however i can't see all my gauges due to the added zoom.

You can see the screenshots here

Has anyone else noticed this, or better yet, has anyone been able to resolve the issue?

FYI, i have a very high powered PC with all full settings running AA and all with 50 FPS... Additionally, i have tweaked my CFG with all the recommendations online.

Thanks in advance.

Brocky D :)

It's a give-n-take situation. You zoom to 1, you gain resolution at distance, and you have to look down to see you gauges. You zoom to 0.5, you get your gauges but not the distance resolution. Try 0.75. It's a compromise, and strongly recommended by many "experts" in the field.

OR leave it 1.00 and move your view point backward to see your gauges better.

Almost all my planes & panels are permanently set to 0.75. I like it a lot, so it's what I set for.But that's just my opinion, for what it's worth...

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

In each aircraft's Aircraft.cfg file you have to get in and find the

[views]

section, and add a line thus:

zoom=0.75

I always put a line like that in the panel.cfg file too, in the [views] section. Never remember which, but one is VC, one is 2d cockpit.

That's how I do it. There is probably a line in the game's main config file, but dogged if I know which one. It'd sure make life easier! It may also be that I made sure the default flight was saved off at 0.75, and that sets it up for every other airplane I load.

Hope that helps a little bit...

OH! So you know some HUD's recommend a zoom of 1.05 for optimum sizing and fit in the glass. just so you know. I don't know what planes you like to fly most. I'm a fast-mover fan...The FA-18, F-14, that kind of thing.

Thanks for your reply Pat, and All.

I tried .75 zoom, and sure it is slightly better regarding the distance from the runway details, however it still limits the viewable gauges. 1.00 Zoom almost removes all the gauges without having to look down... I do use a second 22" monitor, so i have the viewing space. Its strange as i have only noticed this now, and i have been simming for 25yrs...

I have uploaded more screen shots..

First shot is at .75 1 mile out

Second at 1.00 1 mile out

Third is .75 but slightly closer to the runway. .8Mile out

What about yourselves? Approx how far out can you see the runways touch zones, and details? And at what zoom?

Thanks again for all the help.

Hi Pat,

"OR leave it 1.00 and move your view point backward to see your gauges better"

Could you give me an idea of how to do this... I use Active Camera ect, however scrolling changes the zoom.

This might be a problem solver..

Thanks Mate,

BD

Since you have a second monitor, have you considered.....

One monitor is for "outside" views - the regulation through-the-cockpit window views, plus and spot plane or tower views you may choose to use.

The other monitor is for "inside" views - instrumenht panel(s), GPS, throttle quadrant, compass, inside cabin view.

In this way, any zooming you do on one monitor, or even in one window on one monitor, idoes not influence what may or may not be going on on any other window.

Last week was my 18th wedding anniversary, and I was simming long before I even met my wife, so maybe I have been doing this as long as you have
