Vulcan XH 558 Panel/Autopilot

Hi Folks,

I downloaded the Avro Vulcan XH558 from here and it goes well. But the 2D full panel (Alias B747_400) is not its strong point and I would like to change it.

Ideally, I would like to use the Just Flight Vulcan panel. I have installed it and it is obviously much more realistic. But it has a single problem - the Autopilot does not work (Just like it does not work with the Just Flight model in FSX).

But, the Autopilot in the Avro Vulcan XH558 model works with either the Alias B747_400 or UKMil Victor panels in place.

Therefore, firstly, am I right in assuming that the model software itself is quite capable of handling an Autopilot?

If so, is there a way I can take the Autopilot Panel from another aircraft and replace the existing Just Flight one?

Thank you.

As long as the autopilot is usable with the funky 747 panel that came with the aircraft, then another pop-up autopilot control should work. I normally use the 737-400 autopilot panel that I have in other aircraft. It would be a matter of installing the correct [Window.xx] and window.xx=Autopilot in the panel.cfg.

Thank you MrZ. But just how do I do that?

Look at the panel.cfg for the panel you want to use. The first few lines will look something like this:

[Window Titles]

window00=Main Panel

window01=Radio Stack

window03=So forth and so On!

Look for a window=Autopilot. If none, then create one using the next number in sequence.

Let's pretend your panel had no windowXX=Autopilot so you created one, let's say

window05=Autopilot (05 is just an example! it will be the next number in sequence)

Then scroll down to and just past [Window04] (This might be a pop-up for the GPS)

insert something like this:

[window05]

background_color=0,0,0

size_mm=370,80,

position=4

visible=0

ident=overhead_panel

gauge00=737-400!Autopilot, 0,0, 370,80

Remember this is just an example and yours may not be exactly the same. You may not even have the 737-400 autopilot panel and gauge available in your Sim. In this example the window pops up when you hit Shift+6. If your [windowxx] number is higher than8 or 9, then you will have to go to the menu and look at View to see your choices of pop-ups.

Hi again Mr Z,

I have spent hours trying to add various autopilots with limited success.

Some I can add, but none will switch on.

Looks like I am back to manual .....

With the battery switch on if you hit the AP on, then turn off...is there an audible warning? If no warning is heard, then it's that panel that's causing the problem. Was that panel from JustFlight a payware? and what about the aircraft that came with it??

I think I'll clarify my question. IF you have the payware Just Flight Vulcan panel, then you must have the aircraft that came with it. Why not just use that payware aircraft instead of a freeware one?

OK, I see that the Just Flight Vulcan is from FS2004 and the autopilot won't work in FSX with SP2 or Acceleration.

Thanks again Mr Z,

I did lots of variations with the set ups with the autopilots that I tried to install. The lack of audio warnings on deselect did indeed indicate that the panels were incompatible. However, there was one strange thing that all suffered from - the new panels all came up BEHIND the main panel. Perhaps that was the problem?

That new model you found is just fine thank you - strangely it is of exactly the same tail number. I have compared the .cfg files and there are some major differences. I will try inserting the panel into the original then also try just adding that autopilot that works.

I am most grateful for your time and effort on this. I am not ashamed to say I am learning all the time.

Thanks,

Make sure that you look in the Aircraft.cfg file for that bird. It must have a section that looks like this:

[autopilot]

autopilot_available=1

flight_director_available=0

default_vertical_speed=700.000000

autothrottle_available=0

pitch_takeoff_ga=8.000000

max_pitch=10.000000

max_pitch_acceleration=1.000000

max_pitch_velocity_lo_alt=2.000000

max_pitch_velocity_hi_alt=1.500000

max_pitch_velocity_lo_alt_breakpoint=20000.000000

max_pitch_velocity_hi_alt_breakpoint=28000.000000

max_bank=25.000000

max_bank_acceleration=1.800000

max_bank_velocity=3.000000

max_throttle_rate=0.100000

nav_proportional_control=9.000000

nav_integrator_control=0.250000

nav_derivative_control=0.000000

nav_integrator_boundary=2.500000

nav_derivative_boundary=0.000000

gs_proportional_control=9.520000

gs_integrator_control=0.260000

gs_derivative_control=0.000000

gs_integrator_boundary=0.700000

gs_derivative_boundary=0.000000

yaw_damper_gain=1.000000

, and make sure the first line, autopilot_available=1

Notice the =1 part. if it's =0 then no matter what you put in the panel, it won't work. the rest of the settings are up to change, but really should look some thing like this one.

For an explanation of what each setting means read through this page.

Hope that helps a little bit.

Pat☺

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

Hi All,

Well, I am ashamed to say I have given up with the ideal plan.

That JF Vulcan Main Panel, no matter where I install it, will not permit a working Autopilot. I even tried installing an autopilot as an instrument!

So, I have used the FSX Vulcan Det Model from Flt Sim and installed the Panel that Mr Z suggested earlier. I then modified that panel greatly using FS Panel Studio and mostly VC10 gauges. It now looks ok(ish) inside and still brilliant ouside.

When I reinstall FSX - which like everyone is needed at times - I will keep one version SP1 so I can use the Just Flight version properly.

Once again, my thanks.

Ian
