I'm not totally sure you realize what you're asking...

The way I understand it the "server" isn't "out there". It is whoever starts a group session. You don't run a Server AND your session on the same machine. We've had difficulty running a 'server' and a player behind the same IP

I'm a little out of practice using FSX to create a MP session but it can be a daunting task:

Are you talking about a direct IP to IP connection outside of Steam (if you can still do that) or are you wanting to start a session on the Steam Servers and just leave it active?. Do you want to connect to other active groups ever? Do you want a password protected "private" session on Steam? Would you want a session that doesn't use Steam at all and allows multiple sims to connect to the same session?

When I googled "how to host a FSX multiplayer session on Steam" the whole first page was answers to YOUR (kinda generalized) question. Have you done any research there?

There is NO simple 1.2.3. answer that encompasses all the different ways to set up multiplayer sessions/servers. My group has abandoned the built-in server system because we fly twice weekly with three different versions of FSX and two versions of P3D in the same session using JoinFS (previously we used FSHost)

We have a member who runs a dedicated server to support his business and also kindly keeps a JoinFS session live all for us 24/7 (except for never-ending server reboots after endless Windows updates - but that's another story entirely)

If it's mostly a matter of having a private session, then why not agree on a session name and password that anyone in your group wanting to fly can use to start a session using steam multplayer feature if no one else in the group has already started one and then end the session if no one else joins the host. Why the need for server waiting with no one on it - assuming that you are all on Steam and any such player can start the session as host?

After thought: I used to host group ip to ip sessions on cable internet. I lost that ability when the wife switched us to ATT Uverse DSL. I can't host anything now. Don't.

Seriously. Be able to define more precisely what you want to do and if Steam can't clarify well enough, I'd bet someone here probably can.

Easy, just adjust all the server settings you wish to have during that session, choose an aircraft, start the server and then start flying. Your server will be listed and you will get to fly. I've done this many times. Good luck.
