Flattermann Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 Hi, a friend of mine asked me, if it would be possible to install some Addons (from the Folder 'Addon Scenery') on an extern HD. His intern HD is rather full. I think it could be but loading mistakes could also be. Are there some experiences? happy landings! llivaudais Posted October 28, 2018 Posted October 28, 2018 Scenery on an external drive? Almost ALL of my addon scenery is on an exteral USB drive. Some is spread across 2 other HDD's. The simplest thing is to TRY some to check the loading time/performance; the sim doesn't care where it is... Flattermann Posted October 29, 2018 Author Posted October 29, 2018 Thanks a lot for this quick and helpful answer! happy landings! Christian:pilot: Intel i5-6600K CPU @ 3.50GHZ, 4 Kerne, 16 GB MSI RX 480; M. SATA WD 500 GB; WD RED PRO 2TB Win 10, 64 bit; FSX Gold Acc.
il88pp Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 You can indeed put addon scenery on any drive. And activate it in the scenery library. But, if you disconnect the drive, and start fsx, fsx will throw up a lot of messages when starting. The messages are "Error, missing scenery area xxxxx". There errors are benign. They won't stop fsx from running. But the addon area's (on the disconnected external disk) will of course not show up. If you close fsx. Then connect the external disk. And start fsx again. The areas will again show up, and the error messages will be gone. But... Only if the drive is connected with the same drive letter that it had whe you activated the addons. There is a way to make sure that the external drive is always connected with the same drive letter. You do this in the Windows control panel. I think it's in the same control panel menu as formatting and partitioning. (be careful you don't accidentally format the drive btw. Formatting or partitioning would wipe the drive.)
