Back to a nice smooth ride!

GBJim steered me onto this download. 12 liveries in all, but I whittled down my final count to four! Thanks Jim, and you were right, a very nice ride indeed! Here's 1 of my 4, ILS approach (yep, you heard right) to RWY 33, KCHS, Charleston, SC. A little slower than the tubeliners, but that is nice for a change!

It looks like the Stearman turned fashion! I have myself download one since about one month, which might be the one above, and tweaked it somehow for the purpose of flying lazily around. Will try to post a pic! :pilot:

Thanks Gerard! This download was from the Dave Ekert's PT series (12 liveries), yours might be one of them?

Yes, a fine freeware and plane! Possible to tweak or add realistic sound set! That one above Dijon-Darois (LFGI), Burgundy, France

Gerard - My download came with the following files, what did yours come with? My sounds are just fine! Just curious, you're not running an FS9 download are you? That would work okay, just the panel and sound might give you problems? Just asking.......................?

Now, another thought? The Pt-17, I believe has a putt-putt sound to it, which when I heard it, I said this has to go, sounded like an old Chinese fishing boat! My 4 downloads I have setup with the PT-13A which is a more aggressive sound, which I like!

Gerard - My download came with the following files,

I'm running the Stearman with my boxed FSX. The zip I downloaded from Fly Away Simulation (sorry Flightsim :):) ), with likely the name stear12.zip. The sound is refered like, foundable with a search engine:

"Boeing Stearman PT-17 soundset for FS2004/X/CFS2.

Era correct inside and out, will work for a multitude of Stearman aircraft PT-17, PT-13, Kaydet.

Also suitable for the Waco series aircraft.

Engine types varied with aircraft type. Freeware By Aaron R. Swindle Skysong Soundworks."

As far as the stear12 Stearman is concerned, I mostly tweaked it and I fear I don't remember exactly the details of that :) I do that for most of the planes I fly so to get something I like to fly. There, if I remember, I likely changed some textures for the colors shown in my posted pic, completely changed the sound folder, and then I likely also tweaked the aircraft.cfg file with something like (that's about all that I remember ) :

Description=The Stearman Aircraft Company, started in 1927, was combined with Boeing in 1934. In the same year, the prototype Model 70 private-venture training biplane, designed by Harold Zipp and Jack Clark, was built. Some 61 were bought by the USN as Model 73s and the improved Model 75 appeared in 1936. In total, 8,428 Model 75s had been built by 1945 when production ended. The Model 75 was used by the USAAF and the USN, as well as by other countries. All Kaydet versions were similar, differing mainly in the type of engine used. I'll dive into that Gerard!

Yes! I think I remember that zip had some mismatches. When getting such livery, it will miss the engine texture, for example, or such panel, etc. To be able to check the texture files, a simple and efficient tool is DXTBmp by Martin Wright (check at his site http://www.mwgfx.co.uk/ ) -- I even wonder whether that's not on my first era of that forum that someone hinted me to that tool  --

Gerard - If you want better sounds, I can try to help. I've been thru all 12 of these download liveries (developer had a mix of PT-17 and PT-13A aircraft), and yes, sound was an issue for me too! My issue was with some of the PT-17 aircraft, the engines went putt-putt-putt, like an old chinese fishing boat, not a healthy radial engine! If you want the better sound you will need to steer your download over to the PT-13A model, and if your sound files, aren't what I showed you in a previous post (sound and soundai), you may have to do something with those also.

Don't worry about texture, that won't do anything for your sound issue! Just let me know if you need any help from me. If not, and you are happy with what you have, then I am glad! Let me know, I think these aircraft are really fun to fly, an escape away from the "big boys!"

I'll dive into that Gerard! :) Rick, I downloaded this Stearman, but didn't install it:o:o

Jan - AND? Are you going to install it? It's 12 liveries and I surely did not need 12 Stearman! I whittled away at it, got it down to 4, which is still more than I need, but, I won't gain much by getting rid of more! Gerard mentions wanting to add a realistic sound set, but, when I started playing around with these yesterday, big difference in sounds of the PT-13A and the PT-17! GBJim told me that he likes the putt putt, and that's fine if that's what he likes. I like the sound of an aggressive radial engine! I think Gerard may be listening to the PT-17?

Anyway, if you decide to install and have any questions, give me a shout! Rick

OOPS , Jim, you heard me talking to these guys! Sorry You remember seeing the old movies, with those small boats, called Junkets (I hope that is not going to get me deeper?) Don't know how else to describe the putt putt?

I really do love your Stearman, Jim!

Hey! I think we are "sur la même longueur d'onde" like we say in French (litterally: "we are on the same radio wavelength"). The sound set I found is named strsnz.zip and I feel okay with it. I also agree with you Rick that that plane is a great escape away from the "big boys!" I just finished to quickly fly with it over Burgundy by the golden hour. It was just amazingly aviation! :pilot: I will likely keep tweaking it to fly when I will not fly my small airline company from Brussels! :):)

I really do love your Stearman, Jim!

LOL ! That's really funny.

Here is the rich radial engine sound that I finally wound up with. IMHO, it's not as throaty or obnoxious as the original.

This is the new radial engine sound that I am now using on all of my Stearman PT's.

Give a listen. >>>> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkPts4c1prY .............. Turn up dem speakers !

It works for me, even if no one else likes it. :(

Jim

Chinese fishing boat .... Ha !

Jim - Now you're talking! Nothing wrong with that engine sound. Where did you find that? That sounds better than what my PT-13A sounds like!

Jim - You have to admit, in RW, when have you ever heard a 7 cylinder radial engine go putt, putt, putt? I don't think I have, but I do like what you went to! That sounds real enough!

Enjoy the Stearman! I know I am enjoying mine! Rick

That's mostly two points! : to fly, and to enjoy the plane(s) one flies with! That's my philosophy

I believe this is the one you have Gerard?

Yes sir! That's a P17 in post WW2 civilian livery. I'm even going to put into a privately owned, post-ww2 P17 with a USAAF livery as I'm improving that latter!

Jan: just understand well the logics of the liveries and pick the one you want, with the model idem (the Stearman Model 75 was used both the USAAF and the USN -- and some other militaries -- a good reference is on Wikipedia but the French version only, if I remember well, is most detailed. And for some liveries mismatches check inside the appropriate texture folder with the freeware DXTBmp by Martin Wright

That plane is a real pleasure to fly, and that post renewed my interest. I had downloaded that zip, select and tuned a livery but let it sleep in the FSX folder :) Think I will more use it when relaxing in Burgundy!
