FSX- Bad Resolution and Framerate in Fullscreen, but butter smooth in windowed

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have a problem with FSX Disk edition. When I run in Fullscreen mode, the Framerate Drops to 6fps and the Resolution seems to be too low.

If I change to windowed mode, I get 45- 50 fps and the game looks waaaaaaay sharper. I have set the resolution to 1920x1080, but it still displays in lower resolution. I have been having the framerate problems since I installed Sky mods and bether ground textures. Any ideas on how to solve this Problem, so I can play in Fullscreen again?

Hello janvonfalken,

There can be a slight FPS drop depending on your hardware and graphics settings, between window and fullscreen as the heavier graphic loads of fullscreen Antiailasing does not operate in windowed mode, but that does not explain fully why you are seeing such a significant FPS drop between modes, I think we need more information.

We might need to see your system specs, FSX version SP's / AccPack, native screen resolution, along with wether you use a utility such as NVIP (Nvidia cards) Nvidia CP or (AMD Radeon). What are your 3D Graphics settings for AA (Antialiasing) & AF (Anisotropic Filtering) Texture Filtering.

Can we please see a couple of pictures, windowed mode and fullscreen mode (same location/view).

Also could you copy your FSX.cfg and attach it in your next post.

Cheers Jethro

Kind of a dumb question, but does your FSX resolution in the settings match the resolution of your computer screen? And does it match the screen refresh rate?

The frame rate problem dissappeared after a restart, but the resolution problem is still there. I have a 2. monitor with a 1280x1024 resolution that I cant set higher in the settings. I set both monitors correctly, but could it be that fsx mixes up my 1. and 2. monitor? the resolution on my big monitor looks as if it is 1280x1024...

Hi janvonfalken,

Very weird, but not surprising, since there was no Texture Filtering Anisotropic, Triliner, or otherwise) though you said you have it enabled (Anisotropic Filtering which should be set to 16x in 3D Graphics CP) it is not listed for either monitor.

I was going to suggest you rename the config to let FSX build a new one (remembering to put back the Highmemfix=1 and Affinitymask settings from this config.

I'm glad your issue is sorted now, perhaps you updated your Graphics drivers or have some Admin permissions issue preventing writing certain entries in the FSX.cfg relating to Texture Filtering and Antialiasing & FullScreen resolutions. The reason could be just about anything at all, FSX is fickle like that.

You do like to push your hardware looking at your FSX.cfg settings and HW specs, non overclocked i54460 / GTX1050Ti / 8Gb ram / 2 monitors with (Max water effects 7) and high traffic settings, however you set your scenery & Autogen sliders lower. If it were my setup I would limit the Framerate to 25-30 in FSX settings and lower the water effect to Mid 2x and lower my AI aircraft traffic between 25-30%, Boats, ships and Vehicles should only really be set to 12-14%, 47-49% is a heavy burden, they still have to be rendered even if you aren't directly in the vicinity, then you can enjoy the benefits of more resource headroom for rendering and texture clarity at native resolutions. Nothing like a blurry image / choppy framerate to spoil a good flight, other than an OOM / CTD.

Btw:- you should always try to set your monitors to their (Native Resolution for desktop) then you should setup multimonitor Extend or clone or Nvidia Surround resolutions per monitor. You can choose which monitor will be the primary display for FSX.

As to the initial cause of your low FPS between modes and texture quality If you have been updating drivers or playing with resolutions these may have become stuck in the config, possibly why you were unable to see Texture Filtering Anisotropic=1 for either monitor nor could you choose a native fullscreen resolution for your largest monitor (primary) (1280x1024x32 being a fairly low res) easier on the GC & CPU but not delivering quality images on the display. The 1920x1080x32 resolution is a HD resolution and is likely (native res) for the secondary monitor.

All the best, happy flights from now on with reasonably stable FPS (not 6) and Quality texture rendering.

Cheers Jethro
