FSX sTEAM VERSION

Recommended Posts

Is anyone using or has anyone any knowledge of the above? if so impressions?

And when someone gets around to answering the mans question; Aside from providing a few more planes and games with people on-line, how does Steam compare with the boxed version ? I seem to be reading about a lot more problems with people using Steam here in these forums, then I am with the old boxed version. Your honest thoughts please ?

OK, Jim, back to earth.

With Steam you do not have to apply the uiautomationcore.dll fix, and Steam installs in the Steam file structure, i.e. OUTSIDE the dreaded C:\Program Files (x86).

A lot of the issues that I see here with Steam seems to derive from its installation in its own file structure, whereas readmes and other instructions are geared for "normal" FSX.

FSX Steam is almost identical to the FSX Gold edition. The two main differences are the lack of the SDK, and the Steam version replaced the GameSpy based multiplayer that no longer worked. There are some other fixes and tweaks in the Steam edition as well, such as the uiautomationcore.dll fix mentioned.

Keep in mind that Steam is the only way for most people to acquire FSX now, so more and more questions and problems in the forums are related to it. And many of those problems are the same as the older versions too.

I installed steam in December 2015, and have been using it ever since. I had only a few minor glitches in the beginning that I resolved thru the Steam Options Menu itself. Otherwise, I'm totally satisfied.

BTW, tried to obtain the FSX Gold disc set back in 2015 prior to Steam, but it was either thru E-Bay, or by purchase from another country - both iffy propositions...

The only concern now is that Dove Tail Games (Steam) stays in business.

It fixes a crash when accessing the menu bar.

Huh ...... I never experienced a crash for any reason with my old discs, so I guess that I is good.

Thanks guys, I guess that I is one of the lucky ones. :) :) :)

Hi,

A few observations that may be of help...…

Install location - the SE version, be default and like the boxed version, 'suggests' that it be installed in the C:\Program Files (x86) location but deeper down as Steam insists on using a specific folder structure. However, YOU can select to install it wherever you wish, including simply at C:\FSX for example...……..

Addons - First, you don't need to buy SE specific addon payware products via the Steam website or other vendors. The standard payware FSX products will work fine. Most SE only versions available are identical to the boxed version and have only had an 'update' installer added to detect the SE install. Most installers work on locating the install path by either locating a valid windows registry entry and/or a valid .exe file. Others are simply set to install at a 'known' path based, usually, on the default path recommended by the product.

The install process should be relatively easy as well as you only need to point them to the main FSX-SE folder - in fact, based on your comments, as you don't have a boxed version of FSX installed the SE install will default to using the standard FSX registry key entries and default locations that are created outside of the main FSX folder (i.e. at C:\ProgramData\Microsft\FSX and C:\Users\\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX) and, therefore, will have no issues in finding the FSX installation.

Note, however, if you choose to install SE outside of the standard Steam default location any SE stuff you buy from the Steam website will probably have problems installing - but again it should be possible to point them to the install location

Second - freeware - again the vast majority of freeware functions fine

Third - Scenery location - the 'default' is to install into the default Addon Scenery (the same for FS2004) but consider installing it outside of the main FSX folder system in a folder structure that meets your needs. If you have a problem with the main FSX program that needs a reinstall, you may run the risk of losing all your addons and will need to reinstall them. If they are outside of the main FSX folder all you will need to do is ensure that you have a regular backup of the scenery.cfg file. That way, after reinstalling FSX and testing you can simply copy over the backup scenery.cfg file into FSX and you will have all of your addon scenery back.....

Regards

Brian
