CTD Going from Full Screen to Windowed

Recommended Posts

Hello all:

I wonder if someone could suggest what is wrong here? I am running FSX/Win 7 Pro 64/4820k @4.5/GTX Titan 6 GB/ASN/UT2/etc but nothing in add ons other than aircraft and scenery. FSX runs well on my system except for one maddening issue. Whenever I attempt to go from full screen, where I normally run, to windowed mode for one reason or another, I get a CTD with something called BEX as the offender. I can access any functions by hitting the alt key and no problems with that. But if I type alt+enter I get an immediate CTD. Same if I access the View menu and hit "full screen". So in other words it doesn't seem to be related to accessing functions in the top menu, but only trying to go to windowed mode.

I have UIautomationCore.dll in the FSX directory, and the version is the Vista one which I believe is recommended.

I'd greatly appreciate any thoughts on this.

Thanks

Rick

Well, let's see if you can show us a "Faulting Module"

Control Panel-> Administrative Tools-> Event Viewer, select Custom Views-> Administrative Events.

One of the listed events will be for your CTD. The "Faulting Module" should point to the problem area.

Tell us what the Faulting Module is! That will point us in the direction of the proper error, aiding in troubleshooting.

BELOW IS A SAMPLE OF WHAT YOU MIGHT SEE!

General Tab:

Faulting application name: fsx.exe, version: 10.0.61637.0, time stamp: 0x46fadb14

Faulting module name: This is what we need to Know!

Exception code: 0xc0000005

Fault offset: 0x0000ee3a

Faulting process id: 0x748

Faulting application start time: 0x01ce0253dc4b69d4

Faulting application path: R:\FSX\fsx.exe

Faulting module path: R:\FSX\window.dll

Report Id: 9caf77b4-6e50-11e2-8570-3085a99825d1

If there is not one listed:

Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000,

you will need to do as previously noted

No Faulting Module? ->

Remove all of the add-ons, and test the sim. If it works OK, then reinstall them one at a time and test.

Be sure to test each thoroughly before moving on to the next

Still thinking about a new flightsim only computer!  ✈️

I would say only if a Windows update has failed to load. The "Unknown Faulting Module" can be a tough one to trace. Can I assume your full screen resolution matches your Windows screen resolution?

As a last resort you can Google Search FSX Faulting Module Unknown and look through all of the results.

How do I check the the "Windows full screen resolution"? Do you mean comparison of the screen resolution within FSX/Display? I'm sure they are both 19x12, but I'll check that.

For Windows it's Control Panel/Display/Settings and for FSX it's Settings/Customize/Graphics.

This is really a maddening problem. I still have the problem of CTD when switching between windowed and full screen, either way.

I have tried/checked:

1. Screen resolution the same between the display and FSX

2. Removed all three add ons one at a time, and the problem persists.

3. Removed all .dll files from the FSX root directory with no effect.

4. Attempted to exclude FSX from DEP protection. Not allowed.

5. Tried running in Xp compatibility mode. No effect.

6. Installed new (same) SPUnicore.dll (whatever it's called). No effect.

Any thoughts on stones left unturned?

Thanks

Rick

Just to clear this up. Did you follow the commands in the YouTube video? All it does is disables data execution prevention. You should be able to do the same thing by right clicking the My Computer icon, advanced system settings, advanced tab, settings. I have feeling the command in the YT video disables it completely which may or may not be a good thing. You may be able to do the same thing under group policy. Type in gpedit.msc in run. Albeit, not all versions of Windows allow you to edit group policy.

Yes I did. It went exactly as you described except when I tried to select FSX.exe as an exception to DEP under "Add", a box popped up saying "This application must run under under DEP".... Worth noting that it did accept FS2004.exe though.

Stumped

DEP prevents certain virusses.

Files have cm executable part and a data part. The data part is always considered safe, as it won't be executed.

Virusses can hide in the data part. It is a common way of trying to spread malware. In modern OS Versions, Dep, data execution prevention, stops this.

Stop the badly written addon from running. Do not switch off the prevention mechanism.

The cause could be a virus, it could be badly written or ancient software. (ancient software did not have the in file separation of data and executable part so clearly, and software creators didn't stick to that standard back then.)

You wouldn't have FSX installed into the programs folder, would you? If so, that's a source of headaches. Always install FSX into the root of C:\ I have mine as C:\FSX

When you go from Full Screen to Windowed Mode you are doing a Windows operation and not a Flight Simulator operation. Ie: there may not be anything wrong with your Flt Sim installation. But you may need certain files, or certain 'conditions' to be 'active', to aid in making the switch possible. Those certain files (dll, exe, etc) can be activated, or accessed, via lines written into Sim (fs9 or fsx) configuration file or be present in modules folder. So if you have Sim installed in '../Program Files' folder Windows may be preventing you from accessing those files as they are 'protected' by Windows.

So make sure Sim in NOT installed in '../Program Files' folder for starters. Then copy/paste your sim cfg file here so we can go over it an maybe find what is missing.

Two line which should be in (GRAPHICS) section are:

ForceFullScreenVSync=1

ForceWindowedVSync=1

Also: Do you have FSUIPC installed?

Ok. I'll post my FSX.cfg later today, and I'll check for those two lines. Also I have FSX installed C:\FSX

Thanks for the thoughts

The cause may have been having three "SHADER_CACHE_PRIMED=1693458432" in the config file.
