Short Flight!

Recommended Posts

We've been on commercial flights where it seemed to take longer to check in and get seated than the flight. For those traveling between Westray and Papa Westray in the Orkneys, they're 100% correct! These are the shortest regularly scheduled airline flights currently listed.

According to Wikipedia the flight distance is 1.7 miles. The scheduled actual time in air is two (2) minutes. That is probably correct if your destination is up wind from your departure point. But if your destination is on the lee side there are two 180's involved so the trip might stretch out to a terribly long 10 minutes!!

As luck would have it, the weather was against me when I made the trip so I had to do the two 180's. Enjoy the flight. Hope it's not too long! ;)

Hey Bob! It's obvious you're not aware of how commercial airlines work! They could care less whether you have a good flight, whether the flight begins or ends in the time-frame you expected, whether you can connect to your next flight, your baggage ever arrives, etc. And they certainly don't care whether you receive/d any amenity you paid for either.

Sadly world-wide airlines are exactly like every other world-wide business! There is no concern about the product, the employees, the customers!

It's all about how much my bonus is this quarter!

@Michael,

Re the way commercial airlines work in above post.

I think they did care many years ago but I saw things change a lot in the 33 years I worked at the airport with airlines and handling agents, it became all about money, how much they could save by cut backs in staff, wages and work practice.

I was glad to retire early when I got the chance, I used to love it but ended up hating it.

I agree Col.!

I can well remember when going on a commercial flight was an exciting time and staff cared about their passengers. Sadly, even in Business or 1st Class that isn't true today. We used to be treated better in the cheap seats in back than they now treat people anywhere on the plane.

We're taking a single hop flight this fall and got reservations a month ago to make sure we catch our ship. Since that time they've already changed our flight time three (3) times and our seats twice. That's all without notice or fare change. And when it's all said and done, we may miss our ship altogether! But if we have to change our reservation, they'll ding the hell out of us for a "change fee."

Very nice looking pics there Michael. Flying around islands sometimes beat the heck out of land. I do not like the ocean, but there is always the exception to that old school rule. Kenny

I agree! Apparently, based upon his flights, one of those exceptions is named Jan! :p:p
