Ilyushin Il-86 Cargo Conversion

The Telegraph published this interesting story about the safety of Aeroflot. Its accident rate in the 1960s and 70s was way above average, flying all Russian-built planes at the time and not participating in international safety standards. But, as the author correctly points out, the numbers were very much skewed by the incredible number of flights: Aeroflot was a huge airline, and hundreds of thousands of flights occurred every year without incident. Add to that the anti-Soviet bent in western media during the Cold War, and then perhaps the safety of Russians planes should get a new perspective.

AEROFLOT - FROM WORLD'S DEADLIEST AIRLINE TO ONE OF THE SAFEST IN THE SKY

P.S. Strange, but true - the best airline food I ever had was on, yes, Aeroflot. It's the lousy Russian airports and their always-rude employees that are consistently godawful.
