Downwind66
Okay, Mr Z told me how to take the pic and where the pic will go, I find the pic but how do I select that pic and send it to others? Sorry, been here a long time, marvel at the pics some take, often to describe problems they might be having, but other times just sharing pics of their experiences in flight simming. I don't need a long discussion, just need something simple that will tell me how to select that pic, and then move it to a thread that I want to include it in! Thanks, Rick

flytv1
Hi Rick. See my pic below with the steps, after you select the pics from your PC you need to post on the screen that follows Browse>Add files>Upload>Inline. You can Cut and rePaste if not in the right location.
PAULCRAIG
OK, you have taken a screenshot in FSX that you want to share, first locate your pic which are normally saved in a folder named "Flight Simulator X Files" in your windows pictures library, they are saved in bmp format & usally at a size of your screen resolution, this will be in the wrong format & too big to upload to the flightsim.com forum, so open the screenshot in microsoft paint & reduce its size, probably a pixel width of less than 1200 is OK, create a new folder in your documents & name it something like FSX screenshots & save your resized pic to it in jpeg format. When you are replying to a thread & want to add a pic to it you will see a toolbar at the top of the quick reply box, select the "Insert Image" icon which brings up a dialogue box, select "From Computer", "Browse" (browse to where your screenshot is stored & select it) & then select "Upload File(s)". Your screenshot should now appear in the thread after you have hit "Post Quick Reply".

Downwind66
Why is my pic showing up as : lancair.jpeg.BMP Invalid file type. I thought I had saved it to jpeg in the Microsoft Paint Program? My screens don't even look the same. flytv1 reply screen, I have no "Advanced" selection? I'll just play around with it for awhile. So many screen to go thru just to throw 1 pic in there! And then you have to keep signing in to Flightsim.com which can be frustrating!

This forum is no different to most other fora which have NO file hosting because it abuses the bandwidth better used for other things - like helping people create and distribute images. We do not want screenshots in this forum except to illustrate wider problems with the sim, the addon or the OS. Screenshots go on the MSFS Screen Shots forum, where you will find sticky topics about making and sharing images. Please go there and read them. I also think you need to get to grips with your OS and its capabilities as its apparent from the first line of your post you have NOT modified the image to JPEG format as it's rejecting a .bmp image... napamule2
You need to choose to save as '*.jpg' in Paints drop down in screen that opens when you do 'File>Save As' as it defaults to '*.bmp'. So you named file 'lancair.jpg' and Paint added '.bmp'. When you have a forum post window open (where you type in text / message) there will be a 'Go Advanced' tab. You click on that and scroll down to find 'Manage Attachments'. Click on that. Another 'download' screen opens. You click on 'Add Files' (top right corner). Then click on 'Browse' button on window that opens. Then 'Browse' to where you put pic. Click on pic. Click on 'Download' and wait for it to download. You will see it on bottom. Whne it 'paints' click 'Done'. Now Click 'Submit Reply'. The pic will be there in post. Make sure it's 'jpg' and size max should be 750 pixels x XXX pixels. Once you have done this a couple of times it will be 'too easy'. What, do you think I am going to post pics of my grandchildren? You say, "get to grips with your OS and its capabilities. I just learned last night from Paul Craig that I have to covert the pics to JPEG. The reason I am on here seeking info from the members, is that I haven't found any written instruction on how to do this! You are the first person to point out that there is a MSFS Screen Shots forum. Reason I sent the followup thread, is I thought I had coverted the pic to JPEG, but the system (in my case Paint) instead told me it was "lancair.jpeg.BMP" I can understand it being one or the other, but how can it be both? napamule2 has sent me this morning some tips, haven't read them yet, but at a quick glance he is offering help in a constructive way, not in a judgemental way like some people tend to be! Sorry for you having to roll out of your bed this morning and having to read about some Yokel having trouble understanding how to take screenshots! Have a nice day! flytv1
Hi Downwind. There is a limitation of the screen size / picture that you can post, I typically keep the pics below 1024x1024, and .jpg only, for the ones I post here. The best utilities / programs I found are listed below, FSSCREEN will capture everything on the screen and saves it to a file. You can also use it it to Select, Cut / auto rePaste any areas / selection to a new file. Use IRFANVIEW to Resize and or convert and Save as just about any format you want, in this case .jpg then post it. I am not sure why you do not see the same screen I see / posted, I use Firefox as a browser but that should not be a factor.Do you see the Reply button when you open a post, it should be right under the message ? Download FSSCREEN.zip here: https://www.flightsim.com/vbfs/fslib.php?do=copyright&fid=44173 Name: fsscreen.zip Size: 26,833 Date: 10-30-2001 Downloads: 11,128 FSScreen. A small program which is very helpful in making screen shots during flight. It runs in the background, watches the Windows clipboard and saves every arriving picture to a BMP file immediately. You don't have to pause your flight after every screen shot to paste the picture into a graphical software anymore. By Matthias Holzer. Downwind66
Thanks flytv1, I did find the screen that you included in your post last evening. I'm not going to mess around with this right now, I have had issues with my computer recently which I think I have worked out. I have all the info now from several of the members on here, so, in due time I will try to sort it all out, and will be able to understand this process a little better. Many thanks to you all, flytv1, MrZ, Paul Craig and napamule2. I appreciate your suggestions. This is why I have always liked this site, people wanting and willing to share with others! - Rick

napamule2
If you are going to do more screenshots do get IrFanView program. Paint has a lot of features but is not easy to work with. IrFanView is simple but can do everything Paint can do AND MORE (even play videos if you get the plug-in). For example, you can drag and hold the left mouse button and drag from upper left corner to lower right corner to 'select' area you want to keep. The are remains 'selected'. You press 'Copy' icon. You press 'D' key (ie: Delete screen) and you press 'Copy' icon. Wala. You have same picture, but neater as the text on top and bottom will be gone. You can also go to 'Image' + 'Resize / Resample' and choose size you want pic to be. You made yours 640 x 378 and that is good size. If you take pictures with a camera this is will reduce those 1200 pixel size pics to manageable size. You can also go to 'Image' + 'Color Correction' and adjust the contrast, brightness and color. Easy to do and it makes pics not so dark if taken at dusk or when it's dark. Using IrFanview to 'Paste' ANYTHING on screen into IrFanview (ie:when you do 'PrnScrn') is easy and fun. You can crop out what you don't want in pic and you are done. Learning is one step at a time so stay calm as only repetition will help. IrFanview has a readme with lots of instructions and tips. Cheers. il88pp
I do almost all picture editing with GIMP. image editor. Open source and free. Almost as good as photoshop, but much less expensive. You can use it to select a rectangular area, right-click and select copy, right-click and select 'paste as new image'. You then get a new image of only your selection. Then export as any file type you want. Also possible to shrink an image. Or to for example to deepen colours. Or to change contrast. And much, much more. When exporting to a file type, you can use a 'quality' slider. Less qual is smaller file size, while keeping image size the same. While using the slider you can select a 'preview' button. That will show you the size the resulting file will become. Very handy for uploading the preview function. Qual 98% gives 525kb? Ok, then lets select 97%. Ah, now the result will be 460kb? Great! That's below the 485 limit of this forum! 'GO, export':) right size first time, every time. Just so you know, in GIMP, "save" or "save as" saves a file as a specific GIMP file type. .xcf I think. That file type is usefull if you edit some thing, and stop, but want to continue working on it later, and edit your edits. Exporting to .jpg for example, "fixes your edits in place a little more". You can of course still edit that file, but all your old edits are more fixed in place. For uploading here .xcf files won't work. But during creating an image it's a usefull file type. napamule2
GIMP is 100 mb. The User Manual alone is 24.5 mb. IrFanview is 23.5 mb. It gets downloaded 1 million times a month even after 10+ years. Case closed. Why strain your brain when you are just learning. Later. In about 6 mos to a year after learning some you COULD go to GIMP and learn about 'layers'. Which is very powerful tool. Just not needed AT ALL for just '*.jpg' screen shots.
