Vancouver International scenery Problems FS2004

Hi Guys,

First time posting so please bear with me: I tried to find an answer to my problem on the board and tried some stuff but it didn't seem to work.

My problem is that I can't get the CYVR42.Zip scenery working. I think I have followed the instructions in the word doc and just put the Vancouver Scenery folder in the FS2004 ADDON Scenery folder as directed.

When I start the FS application and go to addon scenery nothing shows up....

I also tried using some installer I found a link for on the forum but that didn't work either...

Just what am I doing wrong???

I am using win 7.

Hi Thanks for the link. Went there tried it and could not get it to work.. I must be doing something really stupid... Will not go into great detail unless there is someone who can point out the obvious mistake I seem to be making...Might it have something to do with this "Scenery file error Invalid Remote scenery path in scenery area.038. Click OK to continue" message I get at start up which I do not get if I "UN Check" the Addon scenery Folder" I have followed the additional install onstructions but can not get my Addon folder to reproduce what should be appearing.

Thanks for any help.... and advice.

Several years ago, I had a similar problem from Windows Explorer not fully unzipping some files and it resulted in some addons not showing up. Started using WinZip and problem solved. You may check that to be sure.

Secondly, check you scenery.cfg file with notepad and make sure the scenery is listed there.

If you are adding it into the Addon Scenery folder I presume that means you are putting the "VancouverCYVR" folder in there, which has the "scenery" and "texture" folders still in it? If that is the case, you still have to start FS9, and in the first window click on "settings", then "scenery library", and then "Add area", and after that close FS9 and then open it again to see the newly installed CYVR. Or have I totally misunderstood you?

Hi Roger, Thanks for the reply. You are right, I am putting the CYVR folder into the ADDON Scenery floder and both the scenery and texture are contained within that folder. I have opened the FS and clicked on settings and then clicked on Scenery Library, clicked on Add Area and here is where I am not sure what is supposed to appear.... When I click on add area it takes me into my folders outside of the FS application. Should it do that?

I am also getting this annoying "Scenery.cfg file error. Invalid remote scenery path in scenery area.038. Click OK to continue" which if I UNCHECK the ADDON Scenery box in FS and start the FS it doesn't appear.

I did have this airport scenery working years ago and I have recently re installed FS2004 and since I re installed it I have not been able to get it to work. I also have the FS upgrade.

I just can't fathom out what I am doing wrong this time.

Thanks for any pointers. I am using Win 7. Apart from trying to add the YVR scenery it works fine.

Top Gun is correct when he says browse to the correct location so you can add Vancouver CYVR. You select it to be added and then nothing happens so you click on the white space and it then admits that it has added the scenery. I know that sounds odd but you will see what I mean. And, by the way, the other version of CYVR is far better.

Hi Roger and top Gun,

Thanks for your advice.

I think I know what you are saying... What I did overnight was to uninstall FS and do a clean install (I think) to get rid of the scenery errors I was getting as mentioned previously and any erroneous scenery, texture files etc. that I had previously tried to install.

I did the FS9 update.

As you mentioned I have downloaded and unzipped the CYVR Vancouver International V1 by JONATHAN GABBERT (BTW the link to http://www.jgabbert.com is now dead)

I have run the installation .exe file and it has put the files into the FS ADDON folder accessed via Settings and then Scenery Library links in FS.

I am now going to attempt to install the files in accordance with the Post Install instructions that come with the files and keeping in mind what Roger and Top Gun have suggested.... Will also try to screen print my actions (for reference) in case it doesn't work

UP UP and away..............

Hi Roger and Top Gun,

Well after a load of unistalling, clearing registry etc I have managed to get the CYVR and CYVR LC to appear in the scenery library and running the FS it looks like YVR so I figure it is working. Who would think that after hitting the OK you would also have to click on the white space in the menu box. WTF? WHo came up with that one as it was never mentioned in the readme instructions... AND maybe its just me but I would have thought that an installer package would have done all that?????? Isn't that the reason for the installment application? Anyway thanks to you all for your inputs. Now off to load some more scenery and see if I can mess it up again !!!

That "clicking on the white space" has nothing to do with FS9. It is an unintended imposition by Windows 7. Rather like when a new security update unintentionally prevented FS9 being started with the cd in the drive.

HI Roger

Thanks for the insight into that. I will need to remember that.

Come to the party a bit late on this one but.......

A freeware tool that might make adding scenery easier for you is Scenery Confg Editor (SCE) - see HERE to download and HERE for info and instructions on its use.

SCE offers many features and how you use it to add scenery is similar to how you do so in the sim with one important difference - its done outside of the sim. For FS2004 users this means you don't need to start the sim, add the scenery and then close the sim before restarting it to be able to view the new scenery. You simply add the scenery using SCE and then start the sim. The changes are then written/loaded into scenery list/database as normal.

Another difference is that you don't have to remember clicking on the white space - simply navigate to the scenery folder, highlight it, give it a unique name and then click OK. Close SCE saving the changes when prompted.

SCE will also highlight problem areas and has a built-in text editor that allows the scenery.cfg file to be edited thus allowing most minor issues to be resolved without the need to do a reinstall, especially in the case of the REMOTE type errors as detailed at post #9 where a simple edit may have resolved the issue.

Regards

Brian

HelloBrian,

Thanks for the reply and apologies for delay in answering. I downloaded this application and realise that I did try it earlier when I was having problems and it didn't work, whether it was me not understanding it or it wasn't working properly as I had a problem installing it...

I have downloaded it again and again I had a problem installing it but I switched to administrator mode and it installed.

I will give it a try again when I install some new scenery. Busy now checking out the scenery that I eventually got working thanks to help from all you smart guys in the forum.

Once again many thanks to everyone who pitched in.
