New Controller problem

I've bought a new controller which is a game power JS285 flight stick with extra HOTAS unit attached. When I load FS2004 I have to unplug the controller otherwise FS wont load. I also have to reassign some buttons when i plug it back in.

Any advice I would be grateful.

MS procedure (usually works):

- disconnect (unplug) all controllers, uninstall any controller software

- restart windows

- in FS9, check default keyboard assignments for flight controls, views, etc. (in spot view watch control surfaces); make certain no controllers are listed or detected

- restart windows

- plug in controller, check that it is recognized in FS9

- restart windows

- install any necessary controller software (especially in newer windows the less software between the controller and FS9 the better)

All the windows restarts are to help ensure registry entries are removed/written correctly at each stage; orphan entries from old control settings can confuse FS9.

I tried your suggestion but unfortunately did not work. I used process monitor anf as far as i can see it gets as far as mapping all 22 buttons and then stops thedead. If I Unplug the controller then restart and wait until the menu screen then plug in the controller and enable joystick it works fine but i have to keep re assigning buttons on the hotas unit and the main stick unit. Thanks for your input I am grateful.

It sounds like FS9 is not writing changes into its cfg file; check that FS9.cfg is not write protected and that your account has permission to edit it. There are two sections involved - "keyboard_main" and "joystick_main" - which contain all assignments; you can manually edit these if you know the key codes and controller syntax.

It's also possible FS9.cfg has become corrupted (happens occasionally for no apparent reason); rename the file and start FS9, it will create a new cfg with all default settings. If this new cfg retains your settings, all is well (though you will have to go through FS9 and reset all your preferences).

FWIW, FS9.cfg, scenery.cfg, and logbook.log, are all prone to corruption; it's a good idea to back up each when FS9 is working well (I just right-click the file and select "add to zip", this creates a zip file in the same folder, when/if i need to restore, just right click on the zip and "extract here").
