Dovetail have simply made "a few tweaks that may improve performance of FSX for some users" and also made it multiplayer via Steam, so if you're happy with your FSX now, it's not worth buying it again on Steam unless you're having performance issues (especially with Win 8.1) which the new tweaks "may" cure, or you're into multiplay.

FSX is 8 years old now and we sometimes hear people asking "where can I buy it?", so by making it easily available on Steam, Dovetail will be introducing it to a whole new generation of flight simmers and that's bound to be good for the sim, giving it a new lease of life for years to come..:)

Here's what Dovetail themselves say-

“The main reason you would even consider picking up FSX: Steam Edition if you already have a significant FSX-O[riginal] setup is the implementation of Steam for multiplayer purposes.

That's the big single thing we've done is replaced GameSpy with Steam.

Yes, there have been a few tweaks made that may improve the performance of FSX for some users, but if you already have the simulator we're making no secret about the fact that at this point, what we're offering to you is limited.

The people we're hoping to attract first and foremost are those to whom FSX will be a brand new experience, rather than those who have already invested a great deal of time and energy into the hobby.

We know this will be a little disappointing to those who had hoped for a revolutionary rebirth of the simulator, but we've got a way to go before we can talk about our future plans. At the moment we're focusing on introducing FSX to a new generation of flight simulation fans.”

Don't get it just for the multiplayer. There are much better alternatives to the type of play the MS multiplayer communities offered and the technology is probably not better using Steam.

As a way for new FSX owners to purchase FSX and get going, I'm all for it.

As I have previously said, I have Steam and it runs great in the natural form...on my rig....with default aircraft....The thing now is that I have zillions of addons like aircraft etc...and my payware aircraft like PMDG will not load on Steam.....so I still use the original FSX.....as it is fine and dandy... but at the $5 initial cost for me to buy Steam ...that is a no brainer....for the future.....that is less than a six pack of beer.....I am waiting to see what happens and if my payware upgrades to Steam...so I say...Buy Steam ....you cannot go wrong....FSX is now over $100 to purchase which is a lot of scheckles.....al v

i'm very disappointed with the stream edition. it doesn't have a proper SDK, it can't run the orbx libs so many orbx features don't work, especially the free Yosemite pach which looks awesom, it doesn't run fsrecorder so i can't make a formation flight air show thing

i'm going to go buy the MS gold version
