Confused - Question Re: FSX Real Time

Recommended Posts

Hello all, I'm hoping this is a simple question with a simple answer as I'm a bit confused:

I'm relatively new to FSX and understand there is an issue with crossing time zones in that instead of updating the local time of the aircraft, FSX will instead change the UTC time.

I understand FSX Real Time helps prevent this. However to do so, is it necessary to have "auto-update" enabled within the application? Or will it do this if it's simply "connected" to FSX?

The reason I ask is because when playing around previously with Real Time, it was a little irritating when scenery, etc. would reload every time there was an update when set to "auto-update".

I don't mind if the sim time falls behind by a few minutes or more during a given flight--I just want the UTC time to remain constant and not change when crossing time zones.

If auto-update has to be enabled for this to happen, how do most people deal with the periodic re-loading of scenery? Do they just live with it?

Thanks!

Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is? - Chicago Transit Authority - 1970

The easiest thing for me to ignore is the FS clock, I mean who cares?

I would not put up with scenery re-loads

Nor would I put up with FSX real time

But to each, his own.

You say you are new to FSX.

Did you use FSX much without FSX real time?

If not I think you should, just my opinion though.

Go here and download a free 'real time' program to cope with FSX time: https://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads/files/1476/fsx-fs-real-time-v182/

Myself I have FSX set to Aug 12, 2017 (which is a Saturday on Pacific Time) and 15:00:00 hrs local time so I can go catch the AI Carrier inbound to San Francisco, CA for COPs.

Thanks; however, I'm hoping someone may have some insight regarding the minimum action that triggers the 'crossing timezones UTC fix' in Real Time, i.e."

Real Time connecting to FSX

-vs-

Real Time connecting to FSX & updating/correcting the time while in flight (whether manual or via auto-update)

If all that is required is connecting to FSX, then updating (and subsequent reload of scenery) is moot.

I'll play around with it and see what I can find out, but just wondering if someone knew the answer off the top of their head.

This may not solve your time problem but it will certainly help deal with it. My FSX time is set to my local time which is EDT. However, the UTC time gives me 7-hrs difference when it is really 4 hrs between EDT and PDT. Here's how I deal with it. FSX aircraft either have a panel display of UTC time or local time. If you are flying a plane with UTC display, set your time to UTC time. If your panel displays local time, then set your time in local time. When you cross time zones, the time automatically changes in local time. Nothing changes in UTC time of course. Hope this helps a little. Gipper

I never saw the scenery reload because of passing a time zone. I just use the default time in fsx, and no programs like "realtime".

I think what you are seeing is something else. It is either caused bey using something like realtime. Trying to override default fsx time all the time.

Or, much more likely, you are seeing the reloads because of weather.

When you select "real world weather, update every 15 mins" in weather settings, you will get a scenery/weather reload every 15 mins.

And if you use an external weather program, that time can be set to a different interval, for example update weather every hour.

1. Scenery DOES NOT reload with ANY weather program, default or add-on. Not sure why you are even saying that it does.

2. Scenery does however reload even if you adjust the time of day in FS by even a minute.

3. You never see it because you do not have anything running that fixes the time zone error in FS. You just fly with the wrong times.

So you're saying that when you fly into or through a weather pattern receiving signals from Jeppson you don't see any change?? It doesn't start to rain, snow, get cloudy, get clear, change from headwinds to tailwinds, etc.?

I'm not saying whether is always nearly as changing as when the sun goes over the horizon. However the scenery does get lighter and darker depending on the time of day. And my weather definitely changes my view, including brightness as it changes as well.

Does it totally "reload?" I can't say that I worried enough about it to say for sure. But whether the scenery I view is affected by the clock, sunrise, or sunset, or by changes in the weather, it certainly changes and does so very noticeably!!

Being an old chopper guy I usually fly low and slow.

We are talking about the white window with the black status bar that says "scenery loading" and the FSX display goes away replaced by a black background. We are not talking about the changing of conditions, of course I see those along with everything you talked about. But that is not what we are talking about here.

Well, changes yeah. But not scenery reload, just TEXTURE (re)load.
