gx22
My stock 737 plane takes off close to sea level. When attitude reaches 4-5 thousand feet, the airplane speedometer suddenly drops to 0. This happens when I start with weather of Snow Storm or Winter Wonderland (with snow). If I change weather back to non-snow or start with non-snow weather, speedometer is normal. Has anyone seen this bug?
mrzippy
Probably a frozen Pitot tube! Be kind, give it some heat!;) Still thinking about a new flightsim only computer!
kaashaas
Yes, I've seen the bug in reallife once. It was a cold day in december and it turned out that we forgot to pull a switch on the anti-ice panel. After landing I reported the bug to Cessna. They said they'd look into it. :-) Verzonden vanaf mijn iPhone met Tapatalk
Sentry_FiveZero
Frozen pitots make planes crash! Air Florida in '82 in Washington DC. kaashaas
Actually that was a frozen engine, not a pitot tube. Pitots can be blocked by multiple things. Ice, but also insects for example. Which is why you learn to fly on nose positions and thrust settings as well as looking on instruments. A blocked pitot is a hickup that's not that hard to tackle once it's properly diagnosed. kaashaas
Well... This post is about a blocked pitot tube which here symptomatically gave an IAS readout around zero, in which case you're perfectly able to fly. This was what I was referring to. There are ofcourse lots of possibilities as to pitot/static port (partially) freeze-overs, but I was referring to this specific post. ;-) As far as the Air Florida is concerned: I believe you instantly. I call it a frozen engine because I'm just a mortal soal. :-) I fly single engine piston, not jets. Would it have made a difference for them to manually apply full thrust, if we could leave iced wings out of the equation, since it was only the thrust reading that was wrong? kaashaas
Wow....! I think I'll stick to my C172 cavok flying. :-) Verzonden vanaf mijn iPhone met Tapatalk

It was an iced-over pitot tube in the engine inlet causing erroneous readings to the pilots causing them to not push the throttles up to actual full power. il88pp
Many default planes have no pitot heat switch. You can switch it on (and off again) with: shift+h the "anti ice" switch is for engine anti ice. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
gx22
Thanks for reminding of the defrost. I forgot about that.
