awmc007
Mt computer is 64 bit and I have tried to load and use FS2004 and FSX without any luck. I take it that both of these flight simulators are 32 bit and is the reason they will not work on my system. Is ther any way to make them worK? I'm running Windows 10. ScottishMike
I suspect your problem is configuring the sims to work in Windows 10. I use FS9 (2004) and it works fine with my 64 bit system.
longbreak754
Hi, Nothing to do with your OS being 64 bit and the sims being 32 bit. I have used both FS2004 and FSX on 64 bit systems for years (W7, W8 and now W10). When you say 'load and use' what exactly do you mean? Have you: A - successfully installed but can't get them to run or B - are you having problems actually getting them to install? If A - FS2004 - This is a well know problem related to having to insert CD #4 into the drive to start the sim. W10 ships without a utility called SECDRV (it has known security issues) - WRT FS2004 this is what requires you to have the CD in. The workaround is to get the no-cd patch - google FS2004 no-cd patch to get a copy and info on how to use it. If A - FSX - There are a number of possible reason for this but with out further details of the exact issue it difficult to give a solution. The most common 2 are having DX10 Preview selected (so deselect if selected) and stating the sim n Full screen mode (change the settings to start in Windowed mode). If you search the respective forums here at FlightSim you will find loads of the threads regarding FS2004/FSX and Win 10. There are a number of other things that you can do that will help: Install outside of the default C:\Program Files (x86) location (this folder is the default location for 32 bit stuff, the other Program Files folder is the default location for 64 bit stuff) - install into a dedicated folder such as C:\FSX or C:\FS2004. Try running the sims with Admin rights - locate the sim's .EXE file, (found in the root directory folder of the sim) right click on it and select Properties from the menu list. On the Properties Info page click on the Compatibility tab select the Run this program as an Administrator option and then click apply to set it. If B - note that sometimes it takes awhile for W10 to recognise a disk in the drive. This is especially prevalent on newer computers as the CD/DVD drives are 'tuned' to new methods/formats of creating CD/DVD media and they sometimes 'struggle' to read older formats. If this is the case, leave the disc to load it will get there in the end........ Regards Brian
awmc007
Thank you for the reply. Brian, I appreciate you taking the time to reply in such detail. In answer to one of your questions, I am able to install the programs in question, but I don't get a response when I click on the icons. You have given me many ideas of things I need to look into. So far now, thank you again for your kindness. I'll have a look at your suggestions and hopefully I'll be able to solve the problem.

longbreak754
Happy to help...... WRT your comment about clicking on the icons but getting no response. I assume that you mean the desktop icons that should have been created during the install process....... Possible reasons/solutions for this are: 1. Try running the sim from the menu entry located in the Start menu listing. If this works you can continue to use the menus or carryout the actions at 2. 2. Are the icons pointing to the correct location. A solution here would be to delete the current icons and replace them with new ones - navigate to the .exe file as I suggested in my earlier post regarding setting admin rights and right click on it, select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut). 3. How did you install? Did you use a Admin account or your normal user account. If you used an admin account (or any other account other than the account you are trying to run the sim in) did you make sure that it is available for all user and not for only the current user. If you used another account to install it and didn't select for all users then the sim will only be available to that account even if the icon/menu listings are available. Depending on how your notification settings are configured will depend on whether you get any error message stating that you do not have access etc. Regards Brian
awmc007
Hi, Brian Well, thanks to you, I was able to get FS9 installed and running well. FSX, on the other hand, has proven to be a problem. FSX starts to install and I get a dialog box which indicates "Removing applications." I get about five bars in this dialog box, less than 1/4 done and it just sits there doing nothing while my C/D driver spins like crazy. I was concerned I might burn out my C/D player after a while, so I cancelled out the install. Afer several tries with the same results, the install just refused to proceed even to the point of getting to the dialog box I mentioned. Don't beleive the problem is with the disc 1 since I have been careful with these, but I guess one never knows. I have tried both Admin account and regular account with available to all users and the results were the same. Later I'll give it another try. I do have the Steam edition of FSX installed but I don't know why that would present a problem since it is located in its own file folder. Will keep working on getting FSX loaded, but very happy I was able to install FS9. Thanks again. Bill
PhantomTweak
I do have the Steam edition of FSX installed... Will keep working on getting FSX loaded... Ummmm... If you have FSX:SE installed, you HAVE FSX loaded. You're saying "I have FSX loaded, but I can't get FSX loaded". Just out of idle curiosity, do you need 2 copies of FSX available? As far as I know, you could say "I have FS9 installed, but I want to install FS9, too". Same thing. Just curious, is all... Pat☺ [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again! Bill If you want to install both the FSX boxed and Steam editions, the boxed one need to be installed first. Otherwise the registry and config files won't be set up properly. On the other hand, unless you really need the boxed edition for a specific add on, the Steam edition should be enough.
awmc007
Sorry for the confusion, Pat. Yes I do have FSX steam on my hard drive, but I'm not as happy with the Steam thing and thought I would go ahead and install my own copy.
awmc007
Thanks, Loki. I'll give that some thought. Thanks to all who were kind enough to offer their help, it is much appreciated. Happy Flying.
