malct
Yesterday, Windows 8.1 did a update and afterwards certain items were not working like they should, Google was not loading and flash players were not working, So i did a System Restore to a earlier point and everything was ok, Last night windows was wanting to do another update which i had to do, This morning my PC would not start and left with a couple of options, which was , Do a factory reset or to do a Windows refresh with would keep all my files but would remove apps, But it said that a file would be made of deleted Apps. After doing a refresh that lasted 10 minutes, I found with horror that my FSX was missing, After doing some research on the net, I found out that windows will have made a new Windows file and that i will have a "old Windows" file and all my old files will be in there. When checking in the old windows file, I found the FSX file, So i went back to do research on getting the FSX into the new windows file, Then i went back into the old window file and found that the FSX files were missing. I have checked everything and unable to find anything apart from Add-Ons in the download folder that's on the New windows file. I do have access to hidden folders on my PC, But at the moment, it looks to i will have to install everything again, Unless anyone can help me with this issue. I have tried to restore to another date, but the system won't allow me and i can only go as far back has i did the windows refresh. Any help would be great. However, like you, I am sticking with W7 64 bit for the time being. So am I! And Microsoft "support" for Windows 10 is a big reason I won't. I HAVE NO DESIRE TO HAVE MICROSOFT USE MY COMPUTER AS A "BOT" WITHOUT MY KNOWLEDGE!! Read their disclosure form!!!!:mad: I also don't want to receive all those ads which everyone using 10 that I've talked to seem to get continuously. jorgen.s.andersen
I have had Win 10 for over a year now, and the only problems I have had have been due to the problem with the guy at the keyboard. But then again I don't run Win 10 as MS has intended it, I run everything off the desktop, and not off that stupid tile interface that makes one think the computer is a cell phone. malct
Totally agree with you, I had Vista for many years, Now that i bought a new PC, I opted for Windows 8.1 over windows 10 since it was suppose to be better, But i have had nothing but hassle with windows. You dont get the choice of updating windows, It happens!!!! Looks like i will be spending the weekend reinstalling FSX plus dealing with all the issues that i had installing it last time and having to do 4 factory resets. Just hope i remember the mistakes from the last install and that i do a back up.
keefpee
The advantage of using W 8.1 is that you can select what & when you install updates & that you have a restore function - just make sure that your settings are suitably adjusted. With w10 you have to accept what is given & when, & have no restore capability.
ScatterbrainKid
For all types of computer and OS issues above and beyond FSX, the Bleeping Help site usually gets me out of trouble so it's worth asking there too- https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/
unclegreg
Malc, You mentioned in your second post that Win 8.1 updates itself and you have no choice. This is not true. Control Panel>Windows Updates>Change settings. You have choices between automatic, user installed or no updates. I'm sorry I can't help you with your current problem but this may help you in the future. unclegreg

zswobbie1
First of all, You do have full control of all your Windows 8.1 updates, unless you have set it to Auto update. We all hate change, just read the book "Who moved my cheese" (I forget the author) Then, of course those tiles! Yo should know that yo do not have to have them, & can configure the Start Menu to suit whatever you want? I actually prefer the auto updates on my Windows 10. I makes sure that my PC is up to date with security issues, etc. When I updated from Windows 7 to Windows 10, my 3x versions of FS2004, my FSX that was quickly replaced by P3D, & all my other programs worked perfectly. I just had to manually update my graphics drivers. The auto updates saga! I think it is great. I have had no issues, & I prefer it, as I want my PC to be as updated as possible. (various reasons include security, amongst others!) I'm getting no adverts at all. There is a setting for 'suggestions' that you can switch off, It must be that! So, it is best to get to know your operating system! Well! Robin Cape Town, South Africa
jorgen.s.andersen
That book was written by Dr. Spencer Johnson, and is a very good read indeed. It was required reading when I joined the tech support department with a major U.S. manufacturer of computer backup equipment, and I re-read it about once a year. And I couldn't agree more what what else you said. You simply HAVE to get to know your OS very well, and you simply HAVE to keep it updated to get the bug fixes, security updates and so on and so forth. And from time to time in the threads, I sense that sometimes people install FSX on a Windows system that isn't stable and working OK to begin with. In that case you're asking for trouble.... malct
Its been a nightmare 24 hours with this windows 8.1, Ending up having to do a full factory reset after getting Error codes: 1722 and 1603 during FSX Installation, also tried to fix this error with MSKB928080.exe, But this didnt work either and i also did a clean of the PC that was recommended. Ended up biting the bullet and i did the full factory reset, So I have now FSX up and running without the Add-ons, So thats going to take my ages to do., Just hope i find everything and no issues. One thing i have done, is to change the settings on Windows to alert me of updates, But its my choice to update or not. Once i have everything installed, I will backup the PC. On another note, I have FSX Gold edition, But i have lost the Product key for the acceleration Disc, So i have installed FSX sp1 and sp2. I do have the FSX acceleration on my old PC, Is it possible to locate the product key or am i better just using FSX with the sp1 and sp2 updates? I did phone Microsoft support for the product key, But after half an hour, They gave me a code that didn't work. on a positive note, I remembered to install the UIAutomationCore.dll file, So i remembered that. cianpars
It may be easier to get the Steam edition when it is on special offer if Acceleration is really important to you. jorgen.s.andersen
Malct, the product keys for FSX and Acceleration are inside the DVD box - I assume you have the boxed version of FSX. Inside my box, the top label has the product code for DeLuxe, and the bottom one that for Acceleration. Hope you kept the box - Jorgen
malct
I contacted Microsoft who supplied me with a Code, That was OK, and backed everything up only to get another error on FSX and would not restarted, Tried the back up key, This did not work, so ended up having to reinstall the PC to Factory settings again, This time i used a regeneration Product key site and used the code from there. FSX is now running, but yet to put all my add-ons since i dont have many activation left
