Are you certain it's the fan on the GPU card? How do you know for sure?

1) When was the last time you cleaned out the inside of your computer, especially the blower fans and cooling fins of the heat sinks on the CPU, GPU, and in the power supply? Often, that's the big problem. The fans and heat sinks are just clogged up with dust. Some "canned air" and a small, soft paint brush can do wonders.

2) If you're a tinker-er(?) and/or electronically inclined, you can replace just the fan on the GPU. Usually it's attached to the card or it's associated heat sink with a couple small screws and a plug for the electrics. Very simple, really. You can easily order a replacement fan from numerous places on the net, like NewEgg, or CDW, or whatever. Just look for the Part Number on the fan it's self.

3) If you don't want to bother replacing just the fan, then yes, you need to replace the card. Once the fan goes south, the chip is likely to overheat and burn up, unless your software cuts back it's speed and power consumption automatically, to protect it.

Like I say, quite often, if you don't clean the computer insides regularly, like once a week or there-abouts, just the build-up of dust can cause this problem, and a quick blow with canned air and an easy brushing will solve the entire problem.

Hope that helps :D

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

sorry it took so long to reply to this.

No problem :)

Even though you got a new card, and I'm glad you're fixed, BTW, what I said still applies. You absolutely must keep your fans and heat-sinks clean and as dust free as possible. Not to mention intake and exhaust screens.ports. Otherwise your new card will smoke-check pretty quick too.

But, in any event, enjoy! Have fun too :D
