Need Help Getting FSX To Run

Recommended Posts

My hard drive took a nose dive on my computer with FSX. I had everything on a different partition and was able to recover all data from the drive that would no longer boot into windows.

My problem is getting setting it back up with windows. I tried this software but it didn't work. I may have done something wrong, but I don't know what.

Can anyone tell me how to get things going again. I would hate to have to reinstall it all.

Will I have to reinstall everything including all the addon scenery and aircraft as well?

A tip here, if you are adventurous, is to install all of your freeware addon scenery OUTSIDE of FSX and by making regular backups of the scenery.cfg file. So when you do have no other option but to reinstall FSX, your addon scenery is not affected. You only need to swap the newly created scenery.cfg file created when you first run the new FSX install with the backup one. Any new scenery that you subsequently add, you simply point FSX to it as normal using the Scenery settings page

Depending on how you have your freeware scenery currently installed you may be able to save it to another location, re-install FSX and then either copy back into FSX as before or point FSX to the new location. Either way, you will have to re-activate the scenery unless you have a backup copy of the scenery.cfg file - but this will only be good if you chose to move the scenery back into its previous location within FSX.

A tool that you might find useful is the Scenery Config Editor - see https://sourceforge.net/projects/fs-sceditor/ - among one of the many things it can do, it offers a 'bulk' upload of scenery files - handy especially if you know that the files being uploaded create no issues. I find the tool very useful because you do all of the work outside of the FSX and when you start FSX it is automatically updated.

You can also place freeware addon aircraft outside of the FSX - you will need to manually edit the FSX.cfg file to do so as you will need to make entries into it pointing to the objects location. AS ALWAYS BEFORE MAKING CHANGES TO A .CFG FILE MAKE A BACKUP OF THE ORIGIANL FIRST.

If you look in the FSX.cfg file under the [Main] section you will see entries for the Simobjects - they look like this:

SimObjectPaths.0=SimObjects\Airplanes

SimObjectPaths.1=SimObjects\Rotorcraft

SimObjectPaths.2=SimObjects\GroundVehicles

SimObjectPaths.3=SimObjects\Boats

An entry for a location outside of the default Simboject folder will need to look like this:

SimObjectPaths.(next number)=D:\MySimObjects\Airplanes\

The only issues that can sometimes arise are:

Panels - If the freeware model uses a FSX default model panel it may/will not be located by the addon. This is simple to remedy by editing the entry in the panel.cfg. so that it can find the default object. The standard entry that points to a default panel will look like this:

[fltsim]

alias=DefaultAirplanFolderName\Panel

This will need changing to

[fltsim]

alias=D:\FSX\SimObjects\DefaultAirplanFolderName\Panel

Sound- As per the info given for panels -those that use default model sounds and may need the sound.cfg files edited. This also applies to those items that have their own sound effects files that are placed directly in the default FSX Sound folder.

Effects - Some effects like lights might not work correctly

Obviously, by adding stuff to the default FSX folders, if you need to re-install FSX they will lost. Other than locating and reinstalling them, the only solution to this is to make regular backups of those default FSX folders that regularly get updated when you add something - typically Sound, Effects and Gauges. You can copy the contents back in over a fresh FSX install.

Sadly, as stated by others, payware scenery and aircraft will need to be re-installed because they write to the registry. As it was your OS partition that go fried there are no FSX entries in the registry for the tool to work with.

Some payware items can be installed outside of the FSX (without writing data into default FSX folders) and work with no problems - for example I have both FSGenesis and GEX installed outside of it. However, most payware will write info into the default FSX folder system making it necessary to have to re-install them.

Tell me something ... if you can't rehook the FS to the OS in case of hard drive failure .... what's the point in putting it on a separate drive?

It actually comes down to having a GOOD backup plan. If you do regular backups of the system drive - by that I mean creating a regular ISO image and doing regular backups of essential files between images - you can get the OS, FSX and any other installed programs back to the states they were before the loss.

The process would be to install the new drive and then use the latest ISO to bring it up to a installation standard prior to the crash. Then use your other backups files to install essential files.

IME, most FSX payware products are usable after such a process with out the need to re-install them. Some, however, may need to be re-activated as would some other programs. It depends on whether the program 'recognises' the new drive as a 'major' hardware change.

I cannot think of a good reason why you would NOT just reinstall FSX, then selectively put the addons back in?

You will save gigs of hard drive space, massively benefit startup times, and have the option to leave out that POS that was your `must have` at the time, but has never been used since.

Can you tell me what software I would need and how I would go about creating an ISO of my OS so I can have a backup?

There are a number of tools available to crate ISOs, some being simple and others being very advanced and powerful tools. Some are payware and some are freeware. Google ISO creation tools will give you an overview of what is available.

Two that I use worth taking a look at are:

Acronis (payware) - A very powerful tool with lots of features but some may find it a bit complex to use and offer more tools than they will use.

See http://www.acronis.com/en-gb/promotion/personal/SEM/?gclid=CK-BhY2f2NACFasp0wodKE4NsA

Macrium Reflect (freeware) - very easy to use. Note that it does cone in freeware but also offers a payware version if required.

See http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

Foe details on how to create an ISO see http://www.howtogeek.com/223139/how-to-create-an-image-of-your-pc-before-upgrading-to-windows-10/
