update problems

Yup Paul, I have done everything as you have suggested, and still no joy. Sorry I forgot to mention, that when I boot the pc, it takes a few minutes before it's ready, and tying to get online or email takes a few minutes also. Another thing too is that when I go to dl any of the KBs, I can't seem to get them on here. I get as far as the download now page, but the popup that says 'run-save-save as' never shows up. I have been downloading from my laptop onto a thumb drive and then transferring to this pc. Whether this is relevant or not, I don't know. Also, one thing that kinda puzzles me, is if these KBs are stand alone installers, why, when I run it, does it continually say 'searching for updates on this computer' --seems a bit odd to me. Thanks again. Rick

It sounds like the pc can go online, but can't download anything for some reason.

These KB installers are not self contained packages. They are download links really.

When you run them, the files are downloadd, and then the install begins.

So if your pc can't download then thy will keep trying to download and not get any further.

The last post by Paul may hekp you. That sounded like a self-contained file. (like an .exe) If you can download that on the laptop and copy it it may work on the pc.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Some Ideas:

(follow this order when doing them)

-----------------------------------------------------

I had issues when downloading when I first insalled Win7 2 years ago.

After trying many times I got a message: "certificate invalid" when I connected to a site. I tried a known safe site, google, but also got: "certificate invalid".

It turned out the time and date in my pc was set wrong.

To fix it I went into BIOS, and set the correct time and date there. THen started Windows and synced the time with the time server.

No more invalid certificates after that.

----------------------------------------------------------

run a scan with system file checker.

click the Windows Start button, and type: cmd

you will see cmd.exe listed at the top.

right click on it and in the drop-down click on "run as administrator"

then type:

scf /scannow

(there is a space between sfc and /scannow)

then press enter.

sfc (system file checker) will run a scan and try to repair the system files.

After the scan it will say either: "no errors found" or "errors found and repaired"

both are ok.

third option is it says: "errors found but unable to repair all errors"

if that happens, run it again.

sometimes it first needs to fix some files before it can use those on a second run to fix other files as well.

running several times may be needed.

if after two or three times still errors after sfc /scannow, ten reboot and try again.

(And unfortunately even sfc can't always fix everything.)

after you have fixed as much as you reasonably can continue with the update thing.

-----------------------------------------

Switch off protected mode in IE.

Here's a link that explains how to do that.

It also says somethng about switching off UAC. - DO NOT DO THAT.

It is just the first page I could find with a clear explanation about protected mode.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/63141-internet-explorer-protected-mode-turn-off.html

-----------------------------------------

Make sure you downloaded the correct KB for your pc. I mean, if you hav a 64bit Windows, make sure the KB filename ends with -x64.

Apart from that I'm sure you have the right one.

----

Then try running the KB's.

(And try downloading something to test).

OK guys--we might be showing signs of progress. I couldn't shake the sense that something was wacky on the desktop pc, so I did that 'upgrade' option from the install disk. Then I was able to install those KBs quite quickly. When I was finished messing about, and went to shut down, I got the "install updates and shutdown" notice at the start menu. There were over 100. This was this morning. Now, in the afternoon, Win update is downloading another 111, 676mb worth, and seems to be doing ok--51% right now. I also checked and my update client version has been updated to the one you mentioned earlier Paul. I also did the 'scannow' you suggested il88pp, and found no probs. Updates now at 80%, and now 97% lol. It is in the 'preparing to install' mode so I will check in later and let you know how things are. Many Thanks Gents. Rick

Well, I guess it all downloaded and installed, BUT----now the $#@^% pc wont boot! It opened to a black screen saying-

"reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key--"

I restarted, went into the BIOS BOOT MENU, to select what to boot from, and got these 3 entries--

1) p6 hl-dt-st dvdramgh24n595

2) windows boot manager ( p1 wdc wd2500js-00mhb1

3) p1wdc wd2500 js 00mhb1 (238475 mb)

No matter which I select, it keeps going to the black screen saying reboot and select---. I only have the one drive plugged in-- the Samsung pro, so I don't understand where all that other stuff is coming from. This is getting %$#@ depressing. Many months ago I made a Windows7 Repair Disc through the computer--(control panel option maybe? Cant remember from where on the pc I did it.) would that do me any good? thanks again.

I don't know what has happened, p6 hl-dt-st dvdramgh24n595 is the optical drive & p1 wdc wd2500js-00mhb1 appears to be a hard drive device, it's worth trying the win7 repair disc it can't make it any worse, make sure you select p6 hl-dt-st dvdramgh24n595 in the bios, shutdown, insert win7 repair disc & boot, the dvd repair disc should be detected & run.

First I would disconnect the mains power cable. Then I would check and re-plug the harddisk connectors. Both ends of the data cable, and also the power supply cable.

After that I would reset the bios using the cmos jumper on the mainboard.

I think the wd2500 is the western digital. (wd).

It is strange if the boot manager is on that drive. (option2).

I would expect it to be on the samsung pro.

It looks as if both ssd's are not recognised. That's why to check the connections and reset bios to default.

Well guys--hopefully GOOD news this time! I tried to go with that win7 repair disc, but got a message saying it wasn't compatible, or some such thing--??? Did the cable thing as well. I dunno why it would have read all those drives. The only ones plugged in are the Samsung pro with the OS, and the cd/dvd thing. That wd2500 isn't even plugged in! hmm. At any rate, I got soooo frustrated, I went back to square one, --new install. Went through all that, installed those KBs, changed how I receive my updates, and got all my updates ok--around 200 of 'em. Only thing is this pc seems a bit slower now to boot up, and to open programs, but I don't think I will complain about it. heartfelt thanks for ALL your help guys! Really appreciate all your time and trouble! Rick

Hi again Paul. Per the msconfig, in the boot section, it only shows Window7 (C:Windows) :Current OS; Default OS.

In the startup section, there are 8. Realtek HD audio, M'soft Security Client, CCleaner, M'soft Windows, Intel USB3 monitor, Delayed Launcher (Intel), Ai Charger Plus (from the asus AI suite pack I believe) and Adobe Acrobat/Reader.

Hi Rick, you dont need CCleaner, Ai Charger Plus or Adobe Acrobat/Reader to run on startup so you can disable them in the msconfig startup tab by unchecking them.

Is there any bloatware which came with the original system? you should uninstall any software that you dont need.

It might also be worth defragging the hard drive, I would do this after installing FSX & the SP's. I wouldn't use the Windows defrag tool, get the free Piriform Defraggler from here http://www.piriform.com/defraggler its a very good application.

I don't think those startup item would slow anything.

You may need some more windows updates, and until they arrive the system could start slowly.

Updating IE to IE11 could also help.

Other reason could be if not all mainboard drivers are installed.

SSD drives should not be defragged. There are no moving parts, all data gets accessed fast no matter where it is on the drive. Defragging just reduces the drive's life expectancy.

How long is this supposed 'slow' startup exactly?

If it hasn't already been mentioned, my advice is to go to http://www.askwoody.com and read about slow Windows Updates and how to get it fixed.

I was reformatting and updating 2 identical 2009 HP laptops from Win 7 Home Premium x64 non-SP1 recovery disks to Windows 10 before the freebie offer ran out.

I was almost to the point of crushing boulders barehanded before I stumbled on his site.

Hello again. No bloatware happening as best as I can tell, so that's ok. I am running IE11, and am pretty sure all mobo drivers are installed--maybe I will double check this. And yes, I am aware of no-defrag an ssd, so we are cool there. Probably 3 minutes, before the pc is useable where it used to be well under 1. I get black screen a couple times, that little spinning circle, and my shortcut icons on the desktop look like that (generic?) piece of paper with the upper right corner folded over. Rick

3mins sounds like a bit much. Don't know what to advise though except for the basics. Disconnect Usb devices to exclude failing device, Install videocard driver, sfc, AV scan, make sure any OC is set ok, that kind of thing.

Hello again. Well, things seem to be working ok now, so I best quit horsing around with this before I bugger something else up. Many thanks for all your help. (keeping my fingers crossed) Rick
