Which Joystick?

Recommended Posts

Hi

I have been flying flight sim for for years now on and off, only due to frustration that somewhere along the line I wasn't happy with the game performance, anyway moving on I recently went back to it few months ago, most of the time I have been flying jet aircraft with autopilot ect., spend lot of hours recently reading and watching how to fly VOR, learning to trim plane and most importantly to land with out crashing lol so now I enjoy more flying small propeller aircraft, anyone can land with autopilot.

Now this brings me to I'm looking for new joystick as I only have old but trusty Logitech attack 3, reason why I want a joystick and not yoke is space and easy of use, if I went with Yoke I would need pedals for rudder, I like to be able to use the joystick as mouse is well, not sure what you call it but I think is HAT switch for view( can you also zoom in/out), would like to be able to assign switch not as pressing but moving them for aircraft spoilers, is the a way to be able to operate radio frq change is well for VOR?

I have been looking at Saitek X52 but most likely would have to be used at the moment as founds are bit limited.

What do you think?

Hi ade555,

Here's what I currently use:

https://www.amazon.com/Thrustmaster-T-Flight-Hotas-Flight-Stick-Pc/dp/B001CXYMFS

Thrustmaster 1.jpgThrustmaster 2.jpg

There are finger-operated "rudder pedals" on the underside of the throttle that can be used instead of twisting the joystick.

Decent price too.

It seems pretty tough - I've dropped them multiple times over the years and haven't had any detrimental effects.

YMMV.

Hope this helps,

Thanks E-Buzz

I have been looking at them, I will be coming of basic joystick which don't have rudder control, I did notice you using ezdok but how the view swich works with out it, I think I understand correctly the HAT switch can be used for view in all axis but can you also zoom in ? or you need ezdok for that so you can set view up and then just switch between.

ade555,

Yes, I use ezdok and think it's great - it's one of my "won't fly without" addons.

I've never used ezdok on it's own - only in conjunction with my other "won't fly without" addon - TrackIR - so I don't use the hat switch for panning/viewing.

In case you're not familiar with TrackIR, it is a piece of hardware that gives you "6 degrees of freedom" when it comes to views - Left, Right, Up, Down, Zoom in, Zoom out, by simply moving your head. Zooming in/out is accomplished just by moving your head closer/farther to/from the screen. My description cannot do it justice - do a Google search for more info.

To me, once you fly with it, you'll never go back to using the hat switch for viewing.

The whole setup is a bit costly though...

I use ezdok for the effects such as dynamic head movement - where the view reacts to the environment that the aircraft is experiencing. It really adds to the realism - like, when you drive a car, your head does not stay exactly static - driving over bumps or making turns causes your head to move in reaction - basic physics - action/reaction. Ezdok provides that bit of realism.

Hope this helps,

+1 for the ThrustMaster T.Flight HOTAS X,

It works very good when taking off from the runway,

Rudder on the left side throttle on a rocker / slider,

and I assign a couple of the buttons on the left throttle to use as elevator trim up / down,

very convenient setup.

And very good price at 50 USD.

Good Luck, and YMMV

Thanks for advice, I just picked up thrustmaster hotas x at £32.99 as I'm located in UK, decided on this one against saitek due to price, it offers everything apart the mouse function you get with x52 and works great very happy and can't believe I was flying with out the rudder twist, also finding the rocker switch works fine when you taxi as you can use just one hand and leave the other one to use mouse if setting stuff up ect.

Can't complaint at that price.
