Good Flying Model Advice

I am flying some practice ILS rectangles using the default Cessna C172SP but a more experienced "flyer" who is helping me has suggested that the C172SP (and the Cessna 414A) I am using has poor flying qualities making them in his view difficult to fly.

He has suggested finding a freeware PROP model that is:

- easy to fly

- easy to set the elevator trim on and

- has a 2D pilot's panel

Has anyone any suggestions please??

Thanks

Getting old is wonderful, when you consider the alternative.

This screen allows us to set the 5 'flight model' sliders on the left, I leave mine about halfway like this, I keep meaning to experimentally juggle them to see what effect it has but have never got round to it-

Settings are no good for most complex flight models - Rob Young of Real Air once detailed how sliders at anything other than full right crippled their air files.

The only time it pays to not have the sliders all the way is for helos, and even then the complex FDE's for sophisticated models will usually have their own recommendations.

I have found that most flight sim aircraft do not have as much rudder authority as the real world aircraft. If you cannot slip to a landing, you'll have trouble with crosswinds. The easy fix is to look in the aircraft.cfg section and set [flight_tuning] rudder_effectiveness = to 1.3 or higher. Easy to experiment, will improve your flying. Good luck, OkBob

Is this for ALL airplanes? I DON'T think so. You don't use (Flight Tuning) for tweaking dynamics, but DO use it if you want to MESS things up. Opinion? No - FACT.

What you do is set realism to 'MEDIUM' (and leave it there!!!). Then you set rudder sensitivity to 100% and null to 0%. Then you turn off 'Auto Rudder'. That is how you do it.

IMHO, that's by far a better method! ;) Various RW aircraft have more or less response to rudder input depending on how they were designed. This is not a one size fits all category!

In fact when I try any "new" plane with a sim, I often adjust the rudder and other flight controls' sensitivity. I try to duplicate all control responses to what I have read applies to the real Real World version of that plane.

Being an old chopper guy I usually fly low and slow.

Everyday you learn something new. Since day one I have had my sliders set all to the right to what I thought was the most realistic setting. Is this incorrect?

No, I have my sliders full right=Full Realism. Are you flying a simulation or a computer game?

Still thinking about a new flightsim only computer!  ✈️

Good point! This is a sim!;)

Just to clarify, I was more discussing the fact that planes flight controls are different than the "middle" setting on the realism slider. A sim should simulate mistakes too.;)

Simulation - the representation of the behavior or characteristics of one system through the use of another system, especially a computer program designed for the purpose.

General realism needs to be full right or it seems FSX will ignore a significant set of the flight dynamics parameters -- I'm supposing it uses a simplified flight model if the general slider is not set to full.

The other effects like p-factor and gyro can be turned down to taste as they seem to be overdone, at least that's based on comments I've seen from real pilots. However some addons compensate in their flight dynamics and as a result they recommend all sliders to full (A2A for example).

RealAir has a flight dynamics download for the FS9 C172, but it works fine if you merge them with the FSX C172. Somewhere there is a recipe for doing this. With the RealAir dynamics you can do slips and spins.

I make a copy of the stock C172 and merge the files in to the copy. The reason being that if AI traffic uses the C172 then the AI pilot might not be able to handle the RealAir flight model. If you do this you need to make sure that titles in the aircraft.cfg don't conflict with the default C172 files.

Or, you could get the A2A C172, but unfortunately that's a payware.
