BlueSox14 Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 Hi all, For reasons of nostalgia I've wanted the FS9 historic flights available in FSX as missions. So I've learned how to import the FS9 historic flights into FSX using the SDK. Good fun! I've got them all in, but they are bare bones. No triggers, no rewards, no nothing. Just opening up the FS9 flight file. Before I develop these further and add things like the above, does anyone know if somebody has already undertaken this work and made these missions available? It could save me a lot of work! I have tried a search which came up empty. Thanks everyone, Trent
jandjfrench Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 Hi Trent, I'm pretty familiar with many user created missions and have never heard of anyone using the FS9 historic flights as a model. I don't have FS9 installed so I can't look into what there was about the flights that require the SDK to import them into FSX so I apologize if I'm overlooking something. If you're serious about creating missions that accurately reflect the historic flights I can offer you assistance with mission creation in general and with any problems you might have importing the FS9 aircraft. Good luck Jim F. Prior to posting this I noticed you posted about using FS9 aircraft in FSX. I've flown all of the FS9 planes in FSX extensively and have never noticed any difference in the way they fly in either. Creating a "camera" for the Spirit of St. Louis that emulates what one would see looking through the periscope made taxiing a bit more fun.
BlueSox14 Posted July 13, 2016 Author Posted July 13, 2016 Hi Jim, When I say I imported the flights in, I meant that I created new missions using the Object Placement Tool (provided through the SDK) but used the FS9 historic flight and weather files as the basis of these missions. Outside of getting these missions to show up in a new mission category and linking up the existing FS9 mission briefings and what not, there really isn't much there. I'm going to have a crack at inserting a Point of Interest tonight...I believe that's what places the big giant rotating green arrows into a mission. If I run into any difficulty, I'll let you know. Thanks Jim! Trent
jandjfrench Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 Hey Trent, Are you making any progress in turning the historical flights into missions? Hope you haven't lost interest. I just re-installed FS9 to check something out and while I was checking things I read up on several of the historical missions. There's one where Amelia Earhart flew from Burbank, CA to Mexico city using dead reckoning that seems would make a good mission. Incidentally, I feel that those big green pointers really detract from a well designed mission. References to landmarks, dialogs indicating how things are going and illustrations in the mission overview tab of the kneeboard are several ways to get around their necessity. For example, in the Earhart mission she ran into poor visibility at one point so she maintained her course and altitude until it cleared. This could be handled by a dialog action in a female voice saying "I'll just trust my compass and altimeter until I can see something again". I would much prefer this over using the mission compass or trying to head toward one of the green arrows. Let your imagination run wild. Jim F.
