...and then, I'm goin' to Disneyland!

Taking off from Mc Conville Airstrip near Lake Elsinore, California in my Tecnam Eaglet.

Not so much an airstrip as a dry mogul run! Yiikes! Barely held it together long enough to get in the air.

The Blimp Hangars are still visible at Tustin but the suburbs are coming!

LaLaLand (13).jpg

LaLaLand (14).jpg

Crossing John Wayne Orange County centerfield. (Yes! I got clearance first.)

LaLaLand (15).jpg

Disneyland, Anaheim! Even with the cost of flying this may still be the cheapest way to see it.

LaLaLand (16).jpg

LaLaLand (17).jpg

Whadda mean you wanna ride Space Mountain! Isn't this better?

LaLaLand (18).jpg

Moving on then! Nothing Mickey Mouse about this flight.

LaLaLand (19).jpg

Crossing Los Alamitos centerfield. (Nah, just sneaking through this time. What could happen?)

LaLaLand (20).jpg

Seal Beach passing to the west. Lining up to land at Long Beach Municipal, Rwy. 30.

LaLaLand (21).jpg

LaLaLand (22).jpg

Started a little to high so off the power and full flaps. That displaced threshold is useful too.

LaLaLand (23).jpg

Down smoothly and then a long taxi across the whole airport to park. Why can't I ever land near the parking!!

And another situation saved for a later flight. Thanks for coming along. — Bob

I loved El Toro. I could run up to SF on long weekends (do you know how miserable a cold, rainy, night can be on a motorcycle??), there was a Taco Bell near the main gate, the LA Freeways make for great Saturday afternoon rides...just the greatest base I ever was on. I even ENJOYED their PFT run course. Never a straightaway more than a few strides worth. Tall bushes all around, cool, moist air, it was just...easy to run it. Right on the MAG-11 end of a runway. The barraks were right near the chow hall, and there is a gedunk very near them too. LONG ride to the maintenance vans for radar from the barracks, but worth every second of it. A quick stop at the Mag-11 store for some great coffee, then in to work.

Gad how I wanted to get stationed there. Instead? The polar opposite. Yuma. Most miserable base I ever was on, although Beaufort was a close second. I hated Yuma for nearly 30 years...

Other bases were just...bases.

Thanks for a great post though! Wonderful plane, fantastic scenery shots!

Thanks for the pictures!

Pat☺

Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again!

As usual great looking pics Bob. This use to be my flying stomping grounds as when I was a PP also trained out of Meadowlark Airport (The birds nest, 2300' runway uncontrolled airport) in Huntington Beach, but now gladly reside in Payson Az. I use to fly over Disneyland when it was allowed, no longer as it has been restricted (3 mile distance around there) since Sept 11, 2011. Back in the mid to late 70's I don't know if it was cheaper to pay entry into Disneyland or pay $22.00 wet for C-150 per hour, but I had more fun in the C-150 ( E-ticket). Kenny

Trouble with rules and regulations is the only people who follow them, were never a threat in the first place.

Can you say 'false sense of security?'

I gotta check out Disneyland, I take it that's Orbx?

Yes, good ol' Orbx. What would flight simming be without them? Oh, and when you are in Disneyland, don't be afraid of the giant Mice...

I'm told they're just people in costumes.

I remember giant talking mice, but I think they had a lot more to do with what I ingested...ahem.

The last time I went to Disney Land, and the last time I ever will, I got it in a very bad place with one of those three-bar rotating turnstiles they had at the entrance. The ones with metal bars about 1.5'' in diameter, and 120° apart in a cirle. The guy went through in front of me didn't turn it quite all the way around, and as I walked up to go through, it snapped back suddenly. Caught me a couple inches below the belt-line. My parent's said I turned green and went down like a sack or overcooked rice.

Woke up with an ice-bag in the hotel room. I hope my parent's and sister had a good day of it. I spent the evening in the hot-tub with a very pleasant, and easy on the eyes, young lady of my age. We hit it off famously, and she was kind enough to reassure me that I still functioned normally.

I will never go back there though. That place is too dangerous for me!

Thanks for the memories Bob!! I flew many a training hop out of the MCAF Santa Ana! Though F-4s flying through the blimp hangers wasn't a good memory!! LOUD LOUD LOUD!! HEADACHE FOR DAYS!:mad: They finally got mad and started keeping the hanger doors closed on one end to keep the jet jockeys from flying through.

I also got pulled over by the police more than once while riding a Triumph thorough Lake Elsinore.:o

BTW: Many of our summer Night Fam. hops were made circling either the Dodgers or the Angels night game and listening to the game on the ADF identifier. (Never know when a new guy will need to fly circular patterns using the ADF.)

Being an old chopper guy I usually fly low and slow.
