Is it true that FSX has a huge amount more add-on's (scenery and aircraft) or have I not found a rich source of x-plane add-on's?

Hi John,

Yes it is true, FSX has vastly more add-ons to its name.

If you look at the file library here at FlightSim.com, you'll see that there are over 30,000 files for FSX alone; compared to just under 3000 for X-Plane.

In saying that, it's well worth checking out the X-Plane add-on's available as many of them border on (or are) payware quality, notably the HD Mesh by Andras Fabian. The mesh files are quite large, so I highly recommend purchasing a First Class Membership so as to enable the faster downloads. By purchasing a membership, you also helping to support FlightSim.com which hosts all these fantastic add-ons.

FSX or X-Plane...you can't go wrong:D!!

Happy flying!

The scenery in x-plane is fairly lackluster, although all the roads and rail lines and such are actually accurate enough for VFR navigation (at least in my area). However, the HDR lighting engine blows fsx out of the water IMO.

Another thing:- FSX looks great straight out of the box, but with X-Plane you have to install freeware or payware scenery addons to make it look good..;)

This is actually incorrect.

Whist a default FSX installation has areas of incredible detail, such as major cities and airports, the default mesh, landclass etc (outside of Europe and the US) are all of pretty low quality; hence the reason why mesh and landclass enhancements are so popular.

Out of the box X-Plane includes good quality mesh, not to mention a road and rail network that can be used for VFR navigation.

Couple this with HDR lighting and global shadows and I'd say a vanilla install of X-Plane looks pretty healthy.

Of course, both sims benefit vastly from add-ons, with FSX having the far greater selection of these.

FS2004 reigns supreme however with over 80,000 downloads available at FlightSim.com alone:D!

Happy flying!!

I don't have X-Plane 10 any more so I can't post comparison screenshots, but if anybody cares to post some shots of default X-Plane cities, i'll be happy to post some default FSX shots of the same cities so we can compare them.

It may be that I hadn't got my X-Plane set up right, I don't know..:)

As mentioned, certain cities in FSX are vastly superior to those of X-Plane as screenshots will show, but the world is a big place.

If you haven't used X-Plane for a while then I highly recommend giving it another look. X-Plane is in constant development and as such new features are added all the time.

The included World Editor (WED) and Plane-Maker programs allow your imagination to run riot and are well worth exploring.

As for your setup; if you need help or tips in getting it to perform on your hardware let me know:D

Happy flying!
