cianpars
Hi Everyone, I've been out of flight simming for around 18 months due to illness and vision problems - on the mend now and have managed a few glances at the forums and libraries here and over at AVSIM and a few short flights on FSX. Have I missed anything new, dramatic or exciting (payware or freeware) over the last 18 months? My particular interests lie in European scenery and complete aircraft - I have some payware stuff, but mostly interested in freeware offerings. haven't noticed any update to FSX since the Steam Edition came out (I still use the boxed version). Thanks, IAN Ryzen 5800X3D, Nvidia 3080 - 32 Gig DDR4 RAM, 1TB & 2 TB NVME drives - Windows 11 64 bit MSFS 2020 Premium Deluxe Edition Resolution 2560 x 1440 (32 inch curved monitor)

il88pp
The PMDG 747 v1 is no longer for sale. The v2 is supposed to be out soon. Also, a few days ago I read about a prog called Reshade. Better shaders. Great colours. Only disadvantage I noticed was, no longer a flightplanner NavLog visible. Fixed that by disabling Reshade. By renaming g3d9.dll to g3d9.dll.bak (in the main fsx folder.) I left the shaders themselves in place. Still great colours (I think), and NavLog is back. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
cianpars
Thanks Guys, but I was expecting to have missed a lot more than that over the past 18 months - Has FSX really not moved forward at all over such a long period? kwantz
I admit I miss Flight Sim'n and visiting Flightsim.com. Have been away almost a year mostly due to frustration with low frame rates, FSX crashes, etc. and effect these have on my flying enjoyment. I was hoping for something revolutionary to happen by now which would significantly improve the experience. This said, I'm still using Windows 7 so I don't really know if upgrading to Windows 10 will improve things. Would be interested in hearing convincing evidence on this one way or another from those that have switched to Windows 10.
PhantomTweak
Welcome back! Glad you're on the mend. I can dig vision problems, I was blinded in my left eye by a horse. Long story. Anyway, glad to see ya back, no pun intended. It's hard to keep up with all the new stuff that hits the sim world, especially when you're in it day in and day out. What may seem just another day to me might be a huge change, cumulatively, to you. I suggest just looking around, checking the Library, getting caught up on the forums, etc. It may take you a bit, but will probably be well worth it! Note: My personal favorite, relatively recent add-on plane to come out is the FS Dream Team's FSX Blue Angels F/A-18C, v16.1. If you like the military birds, it is THE most realistic Hornet available. Anywhere. Period. And that is the opinion of not just me, but a number of real-world Hornet drivers who fly with the FSX BA team. I can post the link for it, if you desire. The FCS is amazing! Couple this bird with vLSO, AICarriers.NET, and Javier's Nimitz package, and you have so incredibly realistic carrier action to enjoy. Although those vLSO guys seem to hate my guts for some reason... :p Anyway, good to have ya back :) Pat☺ [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Had a thought...then there was the smell of something burning, and sparks, and then a big fire, and then the lights went out! I guess I better not do that again! Sgt, USMC, 10 years proud service, Inactive reserve now :D

PhantomTweak
The VRS SuperBug? Obviously, it's doesn't come with VRS included, but it IS capable, if you already have VRS of using their weapons, systems, displays, etc. It can integrate them flawlessly, but doesn't come with them included in the freeware version. Having gone through all that, it actually has a superior FCS. Actually, according to some of the Hornet drivers on the team, the FCS is pretty darn the same as the real world's FCS is. Obviously, there are some limitations, like only one FCS, instead of the real one's 3 or 5 computers that have to agree to make a control move, back-up system, and so on. There IS a "manual" mode, however, where the FCS is basically "turned off", and it flys like any other regular FSX plane. No auto flaps, no PID controllers, etc. Basically, it's a great way to reset a faulted FCS :) Or get out of a spin, usually an "eyes-out", or a negative G spin. And that can happen, if you do the wrong things, but it's not easy! The plane and FCS are made NOT to. You can do the "Pirouette Maneuver" beautifully though :D I can't, but maybe you can... :p Most of the system modeling is as good or better as the VRS bird. Same with the visuals, the eye-candy. And of course the variety of loadouts are better done on the FSDT bird, with different drag indices, weight, and MOI's, along with different PID settings, rather than the only thing to change if you add or subtract a bomb, say, is the weight and balance. MUCH more realistic. Does that answer your question adequately? GullWings
kwantz, It's well worth updating to Win10 64bit. Make sure that you have a good NVidia GPU and then you can see just how good boxed FSX still can be using ReShade 3. I admit I miss Flight Sim'n and visiting Flightsim.com. cobalt
I only use payware, and yes there is plenty of new payware scenery from several vendors..Simmarket has lots of good European scenery available...I just bought Budapest and Bucharest last week...also Heathrow. Those who only use payware are missing out on a lot of good freeware stuff -- for example, FreeMesh, which is as excellent a worldwide mesh as can be found anywhere, and Little Nav Map, a fantastic freeware program, as well as many excellent freeware sceneries and planes. The payware-only crowd thinks that $$$ = quality always, and they are demonstrably wrong.
