REDDAIR
Hello, So I wanted to move FSX to a new computer and started looking at ideas on how to successfully manage that. One which made sense was using an FSX Disk to uninstall the game...(Or so says one instruction as FSX is not in the Windows Program List). Overall, I never have luck making a move like this without disaster or irritating shortcomings. So, I started thinking, the expense of buying another FSX copy is smarter, right? Then I see a copy of FSX Gold now on Amazon for $175 !!!! OK, are they getting tough to find---I guess. So...on to the idea of buying Steam. I already knew what Steam is about from other games, or so I thought. Now I am not sure. Is STEAM an FSX upgrade developed by a new company (Steam) or the next phase of FSX? zswobbie1
FSX:SE is the same as FSX, but re-distributed by Dovetail, via Steam, with slight modifications to run a bit better on newer PC's. Development is frozen. Still basically, a 10 year old game. It's not an upgrade, but a replacement. Have a look at P3D Academic, or patiently wait for Dovetail's new sim that maybe will come out by next year, also based on FSX, & will be 64bit with no compatibility with existing add-ons. ScatterbrainKid
..Is STEAM an FSX upgrade developed by a new company (Steam) or the next phase of FSX? FSX Steam Edition (FSX:SE) was released in 2014 and is the latest version, it contains a few tweaks to make it run better on some PC's like Zswobbie said, so FSX:SE is the logical choice to go for. I play the previous version (FSX Gold) on 8-year-old disks, but if ever a pitbull chews them up I'll buy FSX:SE by download from Steam without hesitation..:) Here's a link to FSX:SE at the Steam store, it's a simple "click to buy" operation, plus they do a load of addons too- http://store.steampowered.com/app/314160/
goodpaster
While FSX:Steam is FSX you do have to consider it a slightly different version. Not everything that works in FSX makes the transfer to FSX:Steam. I had problems with a number of older (2008-2009) era add-ons. The other secret with FSX:Steam is if it so much as thinks FSX Boxed is on your HD it installs into what is known as sideload. This causes huge issues with some add-ons who are not FSX:Steam aware. I recommend a good registry scrubber like CCleaner if you previously had FSX:Boxed. The third issue is how it works with Steam purchased add-ons. Some work just fine while others like 3D lights REDUX puts changes into a special folder that makes your default aircraft unusable while it is installed. The developer does not even tell you they are doing this. Other then those three issues it is a great version of FSX and I don't regret the change. It is often on sale so you can get it for much less then its going price. P3D is also a good option so if you are changing now might be the time to consider it as well. My choice was economic, the number of add-ons I would loose going to FSX:Steam versus the number that would need to be repurchased for P3D, made FSX:Steam the less expensive option. Best of luck whatever your decision.
ScatterbrainKid
And because FSX is by far the most popular flight sim around, there's always plenty of advice to be got from thriving asylums (sorry-forums) like this one..:)
REDDAIR
OK, thanks for the replies!!! Steam looks good to me, but I doubt I would keep both games active since I would want them on separate PCs, which then leads to duplicate equipment, meaning more monitors and another controller. Or so it seems. Redd

Although to be honest, this the first time I have heard that before.:( However I'm looking at your post copied in part, "]I deeply regret My Fsx Box version, with Steve s Dx10 everything was perfect very smooth and good fps all the add ons worked well," Didn't you mean you greatly regret leaving your FSX Box version? If so, I hope you still have it! If you do, clean all the Steam stuff out and do a fresh install of FSX from a box!! Being an old chopper guy I usually fly low and slow. alverthein
Rupert, I agree with most of what you say...but I have both Prepar3d ver3.2 and FSX boxed.....I am keeping them both as I like them both....both of them will outlive me...as I am 75......most of these other folks , have not been in this hobby for 20 + years or a real jet pilot like you who flew in Viet Nam I think with my favorite plane the Phantom or something like it when it flew over my "Hootch" in Korat Thailand in 64-65. So, I don't care what they think ...they should get a job and buy a computer that will run FSX and it will provide a great experience in flight simulation....I have no problems with FSX and do not use a disk 2 or 4 and would have to go look for them...LOLLLLL....but...P3D is pretty good as a change and that is how I look at it....and many of the really knowledgeable people on here are using P3D as well...those who are not are missing out....and let the rest go to Steam or wherever....there are aviators and there are gamers....over and out... I am a wannabe aviator..... not a gamer....and I am not telling you what to do Sir...you were an officer...and me I was enlisted ...just a grunt....al verthein..US52579914. Rupert
alverthein, Thank you for your service Sir! Actually I was a Ch-34 & Ch-46 jockey in Nam. I only got to ride a few times in a Duece, which I'll remember as one of the greatest thrills of my life! I also have P3D as well as FSX. I enjoy and plan to keep both, ever hopefull for improvements! However, I use FSX much more as it seems closer to how the world looks to me & I've never taken the time to reload all my scenery in P3D. My comment to the other poster was that if he wasn't happy with Steam, he should clean Steam off his computer and reload his boxed FSX set. Which I understood he still has. I also mentioned I was surprised he had issues with Steam because many other posters here love it. As to the "Sir," Sir you are a Veteran, as am I. We all served for the same reasons & I respect everyone who took the oath, regardless of where they served or when. Once we quit wearing the uniforms, we were and are all "Sirs," none more so than another. Today, like you, I am a wannabe aviator. It's as close to grabbing the sticks as I can physically do now. But I'm a damned intense Sim Aviator!:):pilot: Being an old chopper guy I usually fly low and slow.
