The Million Dollar Highway

Recommended Posts

Orbx scenery

The section of U. S. Route 550 from Silverton Colorado to Ouray Colorado is called the Million Dollar Highway because of the beautiful mountains you drive through. The locals all say that it is called the Million Dollar Highway because they used mine tailings from the gold mines to build the highway and if you could collect all of the tiny pieces of gold still in the tailings they would be worth a million dollars.

My flight leaves Durango, Colorado and follows route 550 to Silverton then to Ouray where we fly over the mountains to Telluride. This part of Colorado is my home away from home!!!!!

When my wife and I moved to Colorado in the mid 80's, we were a bit apprehensive. We'd never been away from the ocean, never been land locked before. Well, it didn’t tale more than the trip to our new home in the Vail Valley to become overwhelmed with the majesty of the Rockies and Colorado! John, your scenery captures that majesty perfectly. Beautiful post; can't wait to see more!

+1 to all the accolades already posted! And I will also add, RW the mountains look even better with skis on your feet! It's easy to understand why this is your second home!;)

I just wish I could still ski!!!!:( However that being true, your travelog does make me feel better!

Being an old chopper guy I usually fly low and slow.
